Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, head to the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. From the center of the area, take VA-58 W for approximately 15 miles. You will come to a junction; continue on VA-58 W until you see signs for Laurel Valley Rd. Turn left onto Laurel Valley Rd. Grindstone Campground will be located at 1946 Laurel Valley Rd, Troutdale, VA 24378, on your right after about 1.5 miles. Look for the campground entrance, which will have signage.

• Public Transportation

  If you are relying on public transportation, note that services are limited. You can take a Greyhound or Megabus to the nearest city, which is Abingdon, VA. From Abingdon, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service (such as Uber) to take you to Grindstone Campground. The distance is approximately 30 miles, and the fare may vary, typically ranging from $40 to $70. Ensure to check in advance for availability and estimated costs.

• Bicycle

  For those adventurous enough to bike, you can start from the nearest town like Troutdale. From Troutdale, head south on VA-16 S for about 3 miles until you reach Laurel Valley Rd. Turn left and continue for approximately 1.5 miles to Grindstone Campground. Be cautious of traffic and ensure you have proper biking gear. The ride may take about 30-45 minutes, depending on your speed.

• Hiking

  If you are already hiking within the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, you can follow the Appalachian Trail or other connecting trails that lead towards Troutdale. Once you reach the vicinity of Laurel Valley Rd, follow the road for approximately 1.5 miles to reach Grindstone Campground. Ensure you have a map or GPS to guide you along the trails.
