Walking
If you're starting from downtown Roanoke, head east on Campbell Avenue toward 1st Street SW. After about 0.4 miles, turn left onto 1st Street SW, and continue for another 0.3 miles until you reach the intersection with Gainsboro Road NW. Turn right onto Gainsboro Road NW and walk for about 0.5 miles. You will then reach the intersection with Orange Avenue NW (US-460). Cross at the crosswalk and continue on Gainsboro Road until you reach the Roanoke River Greenway. Follow the Greenway path along the river for approximately 1 mile until you reach the entrance to the Roanoke River Overlook.
Public Transportation
Begin your journey at the Roanoke City Market. Take the Roanoke Valley Transportation Authority (RVTA) bus route 1, which has stops near the City Market. Ride the bus heading toward the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Disembark at the stop closest to the intersection of 13th Street SW and Blue Ridge Parkway. From there, walk approximately 0.5 miles along the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Roanoke River Overlook. Be sure to check the RVTA schedule for bus times.
Bicycling
Starting from downtown Roanoke, bike along the Roanoke River Greenway. Head east on Campbell Avenue and then to the Greenway entrance. Follow the Greenway for about 1.5 miles, enjoying the scenic views of the river. When you reach the Blue Ridge Parkway, take a left and continue on the path until you reach the Roanoke River Overlook. This route will provide a great mix of urban and natural landscapes.
