Getting There

Car
If you are driving from the visitor center at Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, start by heading east on Spirit Lake Highway (WA-504 E). Continue on WA-504 E for approximately 30 miles. Shortly after passing the junction with Forest Road 25, keep an eye out for Forest Road 99 on your right. Turn onto Forest Road 99 and follow it for about 10 miles. The road is well-maintained, but be cautious of any potential rough patches, especially after inclement weather. You will arrive at Windy Ridge Viewpoint, which offers stunning views of Mount St. Helens and the surrounding landscape.

Public Transportation
Using public transportation can be more challenging, as options are limited. You can take a Greyhound or Amtrak bus to the nearest city, which is Vancouver, WA. From there, you will need to rent a car or arrange for a local shuttle service to reach Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Once you have access to a vehicle, follow the same directions as above from the visitor center. Make sure to check in advance for shuttle services, as they may have specific routes and schedules.

Biking
If you are an adventurous cyclist, biking to Windy Ridge Viewpoint is an option. Begin your ride at the visitor center and follow the same route on WA-504 E. It is about a 30-mile ride, so be prepared for a long journey. The bike ride can be strenuous, especially on the incline near Windy Ridge. Make sure to wear a helmet, carry plenty of water, and check the weather conditions before you set out. There are no bike rental services directly in the monument, so you will need to bring your own bicycle.
