Getting There

• Car

  If you're driving, start by heading towards Alta, Wyoming. From Jackson, take US-89 N for about 20 miles. Once in Alta, look for the Alaska Basin Trailhead. The trailhead is located at the end of a dirt road called 'Alaska Basin Trail.' It is advisable to have a vehicle capable of handling rough terrain, as the road may be bumpy. Parking is available at the trailhead, but there is no fee for parking.

• Public Transportation and Hiking

  Public transportation options may be limited in Teton County. However, if you're near Jackson, you can take a shuttle service that goes towards Alta. Check local shuttle services for availability. Once you reach Alta, you will still need to hike to access Alaska Basin. From the shuttle drop-off point, head to the Alaska Basin Trailhead, which is marked. Prepare for a strenuous hike, as the trail is steep in some areas. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and enough water.

• Hiking

  From the Alaska Basin Trailhead, begin your hike on the Alaska Basin Trail. The trail is approximately 4.5 miles long and ascends to about 10,000 feet in elevation. This hike can take around 2 to 4 hours depending on your pace. The views of the surrounding mountains and alpine lakes are breathtaking, so take your time. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and carry a map or GPS for navigation.
