Amersfoort Highlights: Old Town, City Gates & Historic Treasures

Access the Old Town through the fairytale-looking Koppelpoort Gate, which has guarded its northwest entrance since the 15th century. As part of the second medieval city walls and the hydraulic system of the Eem River, the Gothic structure hides thrilling stories about historic sieges and "wheel-turners" operated by medieval prisons.

Continue to stroll along the scenic willow-lined canal which embraces the charming little town and walk by the 16th-century Renaissance Flehite Museum, “floating” on the water and featuring the iconic naughty “White Bear” monument.

Next, pass by the distinguished 17th-century neo-classical Old Town Hall. Built with grey natural stone, its striking façade features a beautiful symmetrical entrance that bears some resemblance to the style of King Louis XVI.

Proceed to stop by the stand-alone Tower of Our Lady, defining Amersfoort’s skyline with its beautiful ornate Gothic spire. The third-highest church tower in the Netherlands wasn’t always alone: on the adjacent square, you can see the foundations of its 15th-century church.

Then, head to the peaceful southeastern part of the town where stands the enchanting De Mariënhof, a medieval monastery. The well-preserved 15th-century church and its landscaped gardens provide a glimpse into the simple life in the medieval Amersfoort.

Just some steps away is Monnikendam Gate (“Monk’s Dam”). Blending seamlessly with the serene greenery landscapes, the 15th-century footbridge with twin towers looks like something walking right from a storybook and offers a great chance for relaxing strolls in nature.

The next destination is the picturesque Groot Tinnenburg, resting beside a lovely bridge. The most beautiful example of the antique “wall houses” of Amersfoort is the remains of the first city ramparts from the 13th century, replaced by the second city walls in the 15th century.

Go on strolling along the scenic street of back-to-back “wall houses” (Muurhuizen) and walk by Dieventoren, a 15th-century tower that served as a medieval prison.

After that, head to Old Town’s north borders, guarded by Kamperbinnenpoort Gate. The only remaining entrance of the first city walls is the oldest defensive gate in the town, on which you can still see loopholes where flaming pitches were thrown down to armed attackers.

Finally, set foot on Hof Square, the meeting point of lively activities from bustling cafes, aromatic restaurants, regular outdoor markets, to colorful festivals. The vibrant ambiance of locals’ daily life and the medieval beauty of the imposing 13-century St George's Church make the square the perfect final stopover to relax, dine, and savor the vibes of the Old Town.
