St. Matthew in - the - city is the church on the corner of Hobson and Wellesley Street. This land was bought from the Crown in 1843 by Bishop George Augustus Selwyn and the building initially constructed on the site served as a one - room school.

The statue you are looking at is a Toby Twiss sculpture of Sir Dove - Myer Robinson. Dove - Myer Robinson was the longest serving mayor of Auckland.
Baptist Tabernacle
Built in 1884 and designed by architect Edmund Bell, the Baptist Tabernacle is based on the Metropolitan Tabernacle located in Elephant and Castle in London, no doubt because Auckland pastor Thomas Spurgeon’s father C. H. Spurgeo n was the pastor of the London church at the time.
The Auckland Art Gallery, a lso named 'Toi o Tamaki' shows works from 1376 by a range of Maori, Pacific Islander and European artists.
