What to expect
Gateway of India
The Gateway of India is an iconic arch monument located on the waterfront in the Apollo Bunder area of South Mumbai, overlooking the Arabian Sea. It's one of the city's most recognizable landmarks and a major tourist attraction. Visiting the Gateway of India offers a glimpse into Mumbai's colonial history and provides stunning views of the Arabian Sea and the nearby Taj Mahal Palace hotel. It's a must-see landmark for anyone visiting Mumbai.
Antilia
Antilia is the highly prominent and often discussed private residence of Indian billionaire businessman Mukesh Ambani and his family, located on Altamount Road in Cumballa Hill, South Mumbai. It is globally renowned for its immense scale, opulent amenities, and distinctive design, making it one of the most expensive and largest private homes in the world. Antilia is not just a residence; it's a statement of extreme wealth and a significant, albeit controversial, landmark on Mumbai's skyline, often drawing attention for its grandeur in a city with stark economic disparities. While it's a private home and not publicly accessible for tours, its exterior is a familiar sight for those traversing South Mumbai's Altamount Road.
Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum in Mumbai is a significant historical site that served as Mahatma Gandhi's Mumbai headquarters for about 17 years, from 1917 to 1934.Mani Bhavan is a modest two-storied building on Laburnum Road in the Gamdevi area. It belonged to Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri, a friend and host of Gandhi. This house was the nerve center of Gandhi's political activities in Mumbai during a crucial period of India's independence struggle. Many important movements like the Non-Cooperation, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi, and Khilafat movements were initiated from here. Gandhi's association with the charkha (spinning wheel) also began here in 1917. In 1955, the building was converted into a memorial to Gandhi. When you visit Mumbai, Mani Bhavan Gandhi Museum is definitely a place worth exploring to connect with the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Hanging Gardens, also known as Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens, are a picturesque terraced garden complex perched on top of Malabar Hill in Mumbai. They are located on the western side of the hill, directly opposite the Kamala Nehru Park. The gardens were designed in 1881 by Ulhas Ghapokar and are believed by some to have been built over Mumbai's main reservoir to protect the water from potential contamination from the nearby Towers of Silence (a Parsi burial ground). While you're there, you can enjoy the serene atmosphere, admire the sculpted hedges, and take in the breathtaking views of the city and the sea. It's a lovely place to spend a couple of hours away from the urban hustle.
Chowpatty Beach, officially known as Girgaon Chowpatty, is a bustling and iconic public beach located along the "Queen's Necklace" (Marine Drive) in South Mumbai. It's not a place for swimming due to pollution, but it's a vibrant hub of activity, particularly in the evenings, offering a quintessential Mumbai experience. Chowpatty, an Anglicized form of "Chau-pati" (meaning four channels or creeks in Marathi), has been a popular leisure spot since the British Raj. It served as a place for British officials and Indian elites to relax and socialize as Mumbai developed as a trade hub. Chowpatty Beach is easily accessible, located along Marine Drive in the Girgaon area of South Mumbai. The nearest railway station is Charni Road on the Western Railway suburban line. While not a conventional beach for swimming or sunbathing, Chowpatty Beach is an essential Mumbai experience, particularly for its vibrant street food scene and its role in the city's cultural festivities.
Marine Drive is a 3.6-kilometer-long, C-shaped boulevard along the coast of Mumbai. Officially named Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road, it's one of the city's most iconic and recognizable landmarks, known for its scenic beauty, vibrant atmosphere, and historical significance. Marine Drive has been featured in countless Bollywood movies, further solidifying its status as a symbol of Mumbai.
The University of Mumbai Library is a significant part of the city's academic and architectural heritage. Over time, due to space constraints, a new library unit, the Jawaharlal Nehru Library (JNL), was established in the Vidyanagari (Santacruz) campus in July 1971. The JNL caters to the needs of the departments shifted to the new campus. Today, the University Library operates from two main units: the original library at the Fort campus (housing the Rajabai Clock Tower) and the Jawaharlal Nehru Library at the Vidyanagari campus.
Crawford Market
Crawford Market, officially known as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai, is one of South Mumbai's most famous and historic markets. It's a bustling hub offering a wide array of goods and a glimpse into Mumbai's vibrant culture. Dhobi Ghat
Dhobi Ghat is a fascinating and iconic landmark right here in Mumbai! What it is: Dhobi Ghat is the world's largest open-air laundry. Imagine rows upon rows of concrete wash pens where hundreds of dhobis (washermen) manually wash clothes and linens from all over the city – from homes and hotels to hospitals. It's a truly unique sight to witness. Location: You can find this bustling hub of activity next to the Mahalaxmi railway station on the Western Railway suburban line. It's also accessible from the Jacob Circle monorail station. History: This remarkable laundry district was constructed in 1890 during the British Raj. It was established to cater to the growing laundry needs of the burgeoning city. The traditional methods of washing, beating clothes on flogging stones, rinsing, and then hanging them out to dry have been passed down through generations.
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CSMT), formerly known as Victoria Terminus (VT), is an iconic and historic railway station in Mumbai, India, and serves as the headquarters for the Central Railway. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding blend of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture and traditional Indian elements. Visiting CSMT is an experience in itself. The sheer scale and intricate details of the architecture are captivating, offering a glimpse into Mumbai's rich history and its role as a major center during the British Raj. Even amidst the constant rush of commuters, the grandeur of this historical landmark is undeniable.
