The religious heart of the city, the Cathedral sums up all the history, from the monumental Norman structures to the spectacular Baroque innovations. Inside, particular attention will be devoted to the Chapel of Sant'Agata and the tomb of Vincenzo Bellini

Chiesa della Badia di Sant'Agata

Without doubt the most representative of the many architectures that in Catania are linked to the figure of Giovan Battista Vaccarini. Here he applies in the purest and most perfect forms the models of the great Roman architecture, in particular those of Borromini, which he nourished during his stay in 1734-35, reconciling them with the local late Baroque tradition. Recently the path that allows you to admire the great choir of the nuns and the extraordinary panorama from the dome through a comfortable lift.

Catania city centre is a beautiful place and the back streets around the fish market are full of fascinating trattoria specialising in seafood. That is not to say you can't get fairly simple pizza or pasta. Do try the local ice cream, you will not be disappointed. The baroque architecture of the city really means the churches, of which the Duomo is the big set piece. Do check opening times if you plan to visit. The mixture of black and white materials, the black lava stone and the white limestone makes for a highly effective contrast. There is a tourist "train" that runs around the main city sights in a 40 minute circuit. It's reasonably priced and has commentary in English and via headphones other languages are available, I think.
