    We did the SSI Advaced adventure course with Gerard. It was fantastic. We learned a lot. He is very easy and explain clearly what we needed, and guided us to get better. We did 5 divings together and they were all great, in different spots and we saw an incredible life underwater. Thanks also for his wife, Angelike, who did all the reservations and suggested the best programs for us to complement our knowledge.

    As someone who had only dived a few times before and not since gaining my open water certification 18 months ago, I wanted to get back under the water with someone who I could trust and felt 100% comfortable with and Monique and Gerard from Duikcentrum van de Ven were the perfect choice. I had three amazing dives with them over two days, 2 with Monique and 1 with Gerard, in the crystal clear warm waters of Curacao. Swimming with turtles was a highlight on 2 of the dives and I can't thank everyone at van de Ven enough for making my dive experience with them so memorable and fun. If you are looking for a totally professional, patient and fun team to dive with, look no further than Dive Centre van de Ven. No big groups here, but a personalized service from the best dive team I could have chosen. Thank you Monique, Gerard and Team van de Ven.

    This is a family-type business that leads only small groups out at a time. If you've been on a boat of 100 people that basically shows you a sea chart and leaves you to it, you know how nice it is to have a guide who knows the place and handles the particulars well. Van de Ven was exactly what I was looking for. I was able to rent a small, recently-made camera from them for some underwater photography and get myself re-acquainted with diving again after nearly a year since my last dive. My divemaster was really kind, very helpful and they whole group was just really nice. You don't get that everywhere and Van de Ven has a great vibe. He helped me with the shore diving aspect of our treks, literally helping me on with the new-to-me shore-diving fins that go with the shoes, and making sure I didn't fall on the way up the beach in the surf coming out of the water. The reef itself in Curacao is very healthy, more so than in other parts of the Caribbean I've seen, and the diving itself was great. Like many dive centers in Curacao, they are regional. Going to different parts of the island takes a while by car or by boat, and they all tend to stay rather local. If you want to dive up at Westpunt, you need to drive up there and then use a local dive center to the area, for example. If you want to see the supposedly-spectacular East End, that will require another company and a boat. All of Van de Ven's diving is near their location in Curacas Bay, and it is shore diving, which isn't as easy. You don't lose anything by shore diving, it's just a bit more physical work walking around with a tank on. I hadn't done it in about 12 years, so I had forgotten the particulars. However, I learned while there that most of the boat diving companies in Curacao go to the same dive sites as the shore divers, except instead of walking in, you go off the boat very close to shore. But there is the exception of diving in the East End of the island, and for that you do need a boat (my only regret is not scheduling one with another business because it is said to be gorgeous). If Van de Ven were to occasionally partner with another company for those who wanted to go there and to other parts of the island, it might be a nice addition. I think most people who are first-time visitors to Curacao do not know how big the island is or that if they want to dive in different areas, they really do need to book with more than one company. I didn't, anyway, and it wasn't in the tourist information I read. If I go back to Curacao, I will arrange to get to the East End another way, and I will definitely go back to Van de Ven for diving, or anyone they would recommend as they have high standards. They took great care of me and I had no worries at all for my safety or my enjoyment. If you are looking for a company to dive the Curacas Bay area, they are the best.

    What to expect

    At our dive center in Jan Thiel, we take certified divers on relaxed, private guided shore dives at Tugboat or Caracas Bay. We dive at an easy pace, fully adapted to your experience level, so you can truly enjoy the underwater world without pressure. Before the dive, all participants complete the mandatory medical health declaration via the Divessi website or app. At the dive center, we prepare and check the equipment together and go through a clear dive briefing. We discuss the dive plan, conditions, and what you would like to see underwater. From the shore, we enter the water calmly and start the dive once everything feels comfortable. The guided dive lasts about 30–60 minutes underwater. At Tugboat, we explore the well-known shallow wreck and the surrounding reef, home to colorful fish, corals, and sponges. At Caracas Bay, you dive in a quiet local bay with coral formations, sandy areas, and plenty of marine life. Sea turtles are regularly spotted here. All dives are private, only with your own group. This allows us to give full attention, keep the dive relaxed, and create a personal diving experience focused on enjoyment, safety, and fun.

    This 1-tank shore dive begins at 08:15 am. You will set up the dive equipment at the dive center, and then we are reading to go to The Tugboat. Here you get a briefing of the Dive. Tugboat is one of Curaçao’s most famous and popular dive sites. Named after the tugboat that was accidentally sunk years ago, this little wreck rests at just 5 m (17ft). The TugBoat offers great photo ops and is perfect for snorkelers too. Divers will see that that there’s a lot more to the site, however, including a dramatic, pretty wall on one side, and a shallow reef to the other, home to a large variety of reef fish and cool creatures. The reef drops off much deeper for the more adventurous divers. For the second dive, you will go to Marie Pampoen. At the dive site, you get a briefing of the dive. Marie Pampoen is very similar to a car wrecker underwater. The cars date from the forties and were dumped here in the sixties to form an artificial reef. It is possible that you will not be able to dive at one of the dive locations because of the condition. In this case, a different dive location will be arranged.
