Throughout our signature cruise one of our award-winning Docents will present more than 50 skyscrapers, bascule bridges, and historic sites.

Chicago River

On your Architectural Tour, you will learn how the Great Chicago Fire jumped a river and allowed for visionaries of structural steel and plate glass, such as John Wellborn Root, William Le Baron Jenney, Louis Sullivan (Wright’s mentor) and Daniel Burnham, in less than ten years, lift Chicago from the ashes of the fire to new heights. Chicago’s ascent continued into the 20th century with titanic figures such as Bertrand Goldberg, Fazlur Khan and Mies van der Rohe – (higher/taller) buildings, sleeker – and it has soared in the 21st century with audacious new steeples such as The Trump Tower and Aqua designed by Jeanne Gang, an internationally known artist of architectural design.

A great way to get to know the city if you have little time. The guide was very knowledgeable about the architecture and was very entertaining. We saw a lot in a comfortable way.

Jim was the best tour guide. He actually has PhD in history (he doesn't announce that. I struck up conversation with him separately) and is clearly passionate and well versed in the city's history and architecture. In my opinion, this is a must-do in Chicago and with this specific tour company. Oh, and they are the only river architectural tour that offers complimentary beverages, which is a nice touch. I would do it again even myself to experience an evening tour with the city all lit up. SO worth it!!

Really enjoyed the river cruise. Loved the history of Chicago and its buildings. May want to try this at night next time.

Fabulous guide with a huge knowledge of the history of architecture and Chicago history. A really enjoyable tour and even on a chilly windy day kept us very engaged for a full 90 minutes. The free hot chocolate/coffee was a plus as would have the free/soda or water been it been a lovely sunny day. Highly recommend.

Barbara_C

History of the city with architectural highlights. Fantastic tour guide, who encouraged questions. But could have done with a little fewer facts.
