Oriental Bay
The Band Rotunda, a Wellington landmark since its original construction in 1938, has been closed since 2012 as it requires extensive strengthening and restoration work. Originally named by its first Polish resident Dupa as Wellington’s bottom as the area was used for processing whales and boiling blubber for oil So named after one of the earliest ships that delivered engineers and town planners from the New Zealand company that arrived after 1840
The Carter Fountain was gifted to the city of Wellington from local businessman Hugh Carter, as a memorial to his parents George and Ella Carter, and the people of Wellington for a cost of $75,000.
Oriental Bay
Painted ladies and other historic houses, such as those in the prominent Wellingtonian Streamline Moderne style, are constructed alongside and up into the hills that face the bay.
