What to expect
Šnelli park
• Glad you are interested in this day tour (about 8 hours). This extensive walk (about 7.5 kilometers) will take you to the main sights on the Domberg and in the old town. • On this individual and personally guided tour, you decide on the duration of stops and short sightseeing tours, take coffee breaks according to your wishes and do not have to adapt to the rhythm of a guide. • Start is in the "Snelli-Park" ("Snail Park"), the former fortifications of bastions, high earthen walls and wide water ditches. • At the beginning, you will receive a short geographical overview of the cathedral and the old town with the planned stations based on a historical map. • Along the only remains of the former moat we go to the Domberg, the "origin" of Tallinn.
Pikk Hermann
On the historic path you will pass the location of the former "Dom-Porte" and "Commandantur" to the castle square with the castle (now Estonian Parliament) and the castle tower "Langer Hermann", which is unfortunately not accessible.
On the Domberg, the former "upper city", you will discover many historic buildings, squares and several viewpoints with great views of the old town, the former "lower city": • the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral • the former cathedral school • Cathedral church "St. Mary" • the "Stenbock House" (former palace of a wealthy merchant) • the "Knight's House", • the observation platforms "Piiskopi" (bishop), "Patkuli" and "Kohtuotsa" (courthouse) • the medieval gate "Kurzer Domberg" Everywhere you calmly find the perspectives for your photos and decide to take short tours
St. Olaf’s Church
On old cobblestone streets, walk over the "Langen Domberg" through the gate of the same name to the old town with the goal of St. Olai's Church. On this route: • “Süstern (Cistern) Gate”, a gate of the old town with a view of “Domberg” and “Stenbock House” • You can visit a small part of the city wall and 2 towers: from the wall you have a beautiful view of the former complex of the "Cistercian Monastery": today, in this historic square, there is an Orthodox church and the "Gustav Adolf Gymnasium" (also with a long history). • Continue past the massively built "Meal Storage" and the "Ross Mill" (both buildings from the Middle Ages) to the "St. Olai Church" (or St. Olaf Church). From the tower you get magnificent views of Domberg, the old town and the suburban quarters.
Estonian Maritime Museum
After the St. Olai Church, you leave the old town a few meters and enter the upstream "Schonen-Bastion", Reval's largest bastion, which is located to the Baltic Sea and the port. And right back you enter the old town through the "Great Beach Gate" with the imposing defensive tower "Thick Margarethe", today "Maritime Museum". By the way, all the towers that still exist have been given their medieval names to this day.
With your historical map and me, you will walk from the "Great Beach Gate" on the "Pikk tänav" ("Lang Street") to the numerous historic houses and squares of the old town: • the "Three Sisters", example of large storehouses of former merchants • the "herb market" • the "Palais von Rosen" (now Swedish. Message) • the houses of the Blackhead, Olai, Kanuti and Great Guilds • the former legendary café of confectioner and marzipan maker Georg Stude • the "Holy Spirit Church"
After a small passage from the "Holy Spirit Church", the "Rathaus Platz" (formerly the "Großer Markt") opens. In this central square you have the most beautiful views of the facades of the merchant houses and of course of the town hall with its slim octagonal tower. As on this entire tour, you make your decisions to take a break in the cafe or a "coffee / snack to go".
St. Catherine's Church
The paths in the old town are short: From the town hall you walk with me to the "Old Market", the early location of the town hall, through the "Vene tänav" (formerly "Russ Straße") to the "St. Catherine's Church": on the former complex of the Dominican monastery a small "labyrinth" of numerous buildings from different centuries opens up to you in a narrow space, in which walls from the time of the destruction of the monastery (1522) can still be discovered: • the former large dining room of the monks has been home to the "Peter and Paul Church" since 1842 • on the foundations of the former granary is now a theatre • in a narrow alley of the former monastery grounds are now workshops of artisans
The last "stage" of your excursion leads from St. Catherine's Church to St. Nicholas Church. It goes along the inner side of the eastern city wall: • the clay gate (happy to visit due to the 2 small towers) • past the Karri (herd) gate over the • Freedom Square with the St. Johannis Church to • Forge gate and via "Mayers stairs" to • Bastion tower "Kiek in de Kök" to the • Nikolai Church (now the Museum of Church Art) This is where your individual and personally guided excursion ends. With this, you have circled and traversed the cathedral and the old town with the most outstanding sights of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Tallinn: Inspiration for targeted visits to museums and your own explorations to get to know Tallinn even better!
The experience can be subject to change due to bad weather or unforseen circumstances. We always endeavour to give you the best possible experience.
