    João went out of his way to make sure we had the best first experience to surfing as well as recommending fantastic foods and appreciating beautiful Cascais by showing us different parts on our way to our surf lesson. Highly recommend to anyone!

    Had a great time surfing! Beautiful location for a fun activity. The instructor was very experienced which made us feel safe and we really felt we learnt something in the session. Joao was also kind enough to share lots of great tips about the local area!

    As i came to Lisbon to study for half a year, i asked Joāo to show me the surf spots arounds Lisbon and was not dissapointed! He knew a lot about the area, he could show me the coolest surf spots, was very friendly and gave me a super nice day!

    João was such a lovely, fun and patient guide - and the beach where we did our surf lesson was gorgeous. We also did boulder climbing, and sport climbing on the sea cliffs. Sintra, where we had our picnic and bouldered, was beautiful, and our cliff climbing at the coast was stunning too. I’d go on a Cascais Routes adventure again in a heartbeat; it was absolutely brilliant. João couldn’t have been more relaxed or more helpful. It was also really good value. 5 star!

    We will meet at Cascais Routes base (GPS Coordinates: 38°44'04.0"N 9°27'05.9"W). Our base is located in Charneca, a village inserted in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and very close to Guincho beach. From there, we will take you by van to the spot where surf lessons will take place (usually Guincho beach or Carcavelos beach). FROM LISBON TO CASCAIS TRAIN STATION Get to Cais do Sodré train (and metro) station and take the train that connects Lisbon to Cascais. Get off at Cascais Station (last stop). *Tip: Sit on the side of the train with ocean views. The approximate journey time is 40 minutes and the ticket price is 2.25 EUR. Trains Lisboa-Cascais and vice-versa run every 20-30min and from 5:30 am to 1:30 am every day of the week. FROM CASCAIS TRAIN STATION TO CASCAIS ROUTES BASE Once at Cascais train station take and uber (around 6€) or a taxi to our base. Cascais bus station is just 2min walking from train station. You could also take a bus to get to our base (Bus company name: Scotturb. Buses nr 414 and 402, stop name: Charneca. Bus nr 403 is faster, ask bus driver where to stop).

    What to expect

    The total duration of the activity is around 2hr. You will either have the surf experience at Carcavelos beach or at Guincho beach (depending on your surfing skills and ocean conditions). The surf lessons consist on surf practice and surf theory. Every surf lesson will start with explaining the conditions of the spot (the beach, types of waves, currents, reference points), followed by warm-up and stretching exercises. First exercises and explanations are done on the beach (paddling, position on the board, take-off techniques, safety in the water, balance). Then, you will jump into the water to put into practice everything you have learnt on the sand. Once in the water, you will be under constant supervision of your instructors who will attentively control and comment on your performance, help you choose the right waves and correct your position if necessary. The only thing we ask of you is to relax and enjoy yourself! WHAT TO BRING: Swimming suit, towel, sun protector, water and comfortable clothes & footwear. You don´t need to bring any surfing gear. We provide wetsuit + surf board.
