Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio

In 1889 Wright completed the construction of a small two-story residence in Oak Park on the Western edges of Chicago. The building was the first over which Wright exerted complete artistic control. Designed as a home for his family, the Oak Park residence was a site of experimentation for the young architect during the twenty-year period he lived there. Wright revised the design of the building multiple times, continually refining ideas that would shape his work for decades to come.

We toured the home and studio and the guide was quite good. The children's playroom was especially endearing. We also enjoyed the outside walking tour after the inside tour.

we were unable to enter. The woman at Viator told us we were all set for the 10 AM tour at the Robie house. Little did we know that we were not secured 2 spots at the 10 AM session. We got there and that slot was full and this was the only slot we were able to attend. We will be asking for our $54 dollars returned.

We did this tour as part of the FLW yearly Walk. It was a great tour and a must for any Frank Lloyd Wright fan. The home and studio are very interesting. The guides are very knowledgeable and will answer any question you may have. You can take as many photos as you want. The home has been refurbished to look as it did when the family lived there. The art glass and light effects are very beautiful. There is a gift shop around the back with many items of interest for the architecturally and artistically inclined. The whole neighborhood is worth a visit and it is beautiful. Oak Park has many lovely homes. It has the highest concentration of FLW homes anywhere.

This was a great tour. Polly, our tour guide was very informative, friendly and entertaining. There was plenty of background information, a chance to see the house and a visit to his studio.

Superb, optional 6 block walking tour of his early houses representing all types styles he produced. His entire house and studio have been completely restored to its 1908 glory to the most meticulous detail. You can just imagine his children doing performances upstairs and his interns working feverishly in his studio. The octagonal office (library) is the best lit and natural work space I have ever seen.

For me, it was very cool to see the beginnings of Frank Lloyd Wright. My kids weren't as enthusiastic. Next time, I'd teach them in advance about the person. Our tour was quaint and interesting. I'm glad we did it!

The guide was engaging and clearly passionate about imparting what he’s learned. It was fascinating and such a privilege to stand in the very space where his profession and family took root. I highly recommend it as well as also taking a self-guided walking or driving tour to the nearby dozen sites that he designed.

I have always wanted to visit a FLW house and it never panned out. I am so glad it did. This is an amazing place. I just can’t imagine what went on in his head. The details are amazing. There are so many details you would never notice in one visit. I highly recommend. It is well worth the time.

We've visited several Frank Lloyd Wright homes ranging from Falling Water (Pennsylvania) and Darwin Martin and Graycliff (Buffalo) to Taliesen West (Scottsdale) to Usonian homes in northern Ohio. If you have any interest or curiosity in Frank Lloyd Wright or architecture, you definitely want to come here and to give yourself some additional time to see other nearby FLW structures. This is Frank Lloyd Wright's family home, which he designed and expanded. It was fun to see how he himself lived and to hear stories of him as a father. You'll want to book ahead online as a tour is required. The docents are excellent. The studio itself alone is worth the cost of admission. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to photograph (not because of any rules, but rather it's not configured in a way that gives you the kind of picture you might want). Just seeing it makes you want to work there. Having said that, several of the rooms of the house are quite appealing in their own right, with all kinds of clever touches. As noted above, there are several other Frank Lloyd homes just around the corner. While they are not open to the public, you can easily see the exteriors and it is an elegant neighborhood that is pleasant to walk around. There is a self-guided walking tour, but you can also find maps online. The Unity Temple, designed by Wright, is also a short drive away. This is a unique and uniquely American site that anyone with even a passing interest in Frank Lloyd Wright should see.

A fascinating tour of FLW's first home and studio, which really helped us to understand his early years in Chicago. Our only complaint is that the group was perhaps a little too large (15 people), meaning that the tour guide became rather too concerned about moving us on, and although photography is allowed, of course it is difficult for everyone to take the pictures they want as inevitably everyone wanted photos of the rooms without other people in them. The additional audio tour of the houses in the immediate neighbourhood was excellent.
