Bo-kaap
Bo-Kaap’s -formerly known as the Malay Quarter-, dates back to the 1760's, when numerous rental houses “huurhuisjes”; were built and leased to slaves brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa to work in the Cape. It is a mix of Cape Dutch and Georgian Architecture. Houses were later repainted with bright colors by their owners as an expression of their freedom! Seal Island in Hout Bay, also known as Duiker Island (Afrikaans), is renowned for its marine wildlife, including the Cape fur seals and marine bird species such as the common cormorants and kelp gulls. Take a 45-minute boat-trip to the seal-breeding colony and enjoy a close encounter thousands of these Cape Fur Seals. Just Nuisance
Interesting famous monument of the only dog -Great Dane- in SA, ever to be enlisted in the Royal Navy shore establishment in Simon’s Town between 1939 and 1944. Able Seaman ‘Just Nuisance’ was rating with rank, pay, rations and duties – the same privileges as any other rating with the same rank. of ‘Able Seaman’ (AB)served at HMS Afrikander, a Royal Navy, South Africa. He died in 1944 at the age of seven years and was buried with full military honors.
Old Cape Point Lighthouse
The Point, the most southern tip of the Cape Peninsula, has been treated with respect by sailors and navigators. The lighthouse on top of the pick is historically a landmark of great navigational value until the introduction of radar. At night ships had to approach closely to obtain bearings and thereby were exposed to the dangers of Bellows Rock and Albatross Rock nearby.
