The staff at Macao Surf Camp is the best! I've worked with them twice...once a few years ago, and again last week. Both experiences were fantastic!
I have a decent bit of surfing experience, but the rest of my family does not. Five of our group took a group lesson, I just rented a surfboard. Everyone had a great time!
We stayed at a resort a bit further up the coast. MSC arranged to pick our group up at the resort and brought us to Playa Macao. They are located at a public beach access, with a little facility that has a changing area, shower, and plenty of surfboards of all types (long, short, both hard and foam-topped). For people bringing towels/bags/wallets/phones, they are happy to safely store everything while you are surfing. They also have rashguards available to borrow if you need them.
The section of beach to the immediate west of MSC is wide-open...so plenty of space to spread out. No competition for waves, no rocks, and no danger of irritating any locals. August isn't necessarily peak surfing season, but we experienced small (2-4 ft), friendly waves that were great for lessons...but also good enough for me to get in some short but gratifying rides. My family members taking lessons reported that the instructors were super-friendly, and as I was watching from down the beach I saw everyone up on their feet multiple times...with lots of triumphant, happy yelling. As you would expect, they also have staff taking pictures, so bring a credit card if you want to purchase (which we did in this case).
After lessons/surfing...there is a small bar to grab a beer and a snack, and some locals selling crafts. (Also friendly and fun!)
If you are after a serious, big-wave surfing experience (in August)...this might not be the place. But for a friendly morning of surfing, some great introductory lessons, and a staff that can handle the logistics, MSC is amazing! Special thanks to Larisa for answering my questions and getting everything arranged.
Could not recommend more! I'm looking forward to our next visit!

I took my son on this excursion. The pickup and drop off was easy and our instructors were fantastic. We got one on one attention and were up surfing by the second wave. The beach is also stunning!! My advice, there will be someone who wants to take your pictures for an additional fee. I would recommend taking advantage of this. They guy stayed in the water for almost half the time and took almost 200 pics. i got numerous pics of my son and I riding waves together. I brought my phone in a waterproof case and there is just no way to get good pics while also trying to surf.

Awesome time with the MSC crew. My kids and I had surfed a few times in the past but it was a few years - after a quick popup technique refresher on the sand, they had us catching waves from the very first one. All the instructors were super friendly and helpful and had great tips along the way to improve our riding abilities. Would definitely recommend and go with them again!

My 18 year old brother and I (age 21) did this excursion and within 3 tries we got up! The guys that helped us were super well versed on surfing and kept us motivated. We appreciated that they were watching the weather before we went so we had the best experience we could. Really fun time and would recommend!

What to expect
Surf together with friends or family on one of Punta Cana’s most beautiful beaches. Group lessons at Macao Surf Camp are designed for beginners and progressing surfers who want to learn in a fun, supportive environment.
After hotel pickup, travelers arrive at Macao Beach, get fitted with a surfboard and rash guard, and meet their instructor. Each group shares one instructor between two or three students, allowing for personal attention while taking turns catching waves.
Beginners start with a short on-the-sand lesson covering ocean safety, paddling, and standing techniques before entering the water. Intermediate and advanced surfers begin in the ocean after a brief evaluation. Instructors stay close in the water, helping with wave selection, balance, and technique throughout the session.

Lessons are divided in two sessions and in the half time break we provide coconut or purified water and some fruit. One instructor shared by two or three students (in your own party). Allows for close communication between student and instructor but, at times, the student must wait their turn to catch a wave. Round-trip transportation is included.
