What to expect
Hierapolis & Pamukkale
HIERAPOLIS, PAMUKKALE. The sacred Hierapolis of Phrygia, one of the antique cities of the Aegean, was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988. The foundations of Hierapolis were laid during the Phrygian Era because of the sacred site of Cybele in which the cave under the Temple of Apollo was located.
CLEOPATRA'S POOL, also known as Pamukkale Antique Pool, is a man-made pool said to have been a gift from Marc Anthony to Cleopatra. In the 7th century, a massive earthquake destroyed the Roman Temple to Apollo surrounding the pool, toppling the columns into the water, where they now remain for visitors to swim around.
Contains findings from the excavations at Hierapolis and Laodicea, including sarcophagi, statues, gravestones, pedestals, pillars, and inscriptions. Among these artifacts are statues of Tyche, Dionysos, Pan, Asklepios, Isis, Demeter and Triton, which although executed by the Romans were inspired by the Hellenistic traditions. Particularly interesting are representations of local customs on family tombs. Peculiar to this area are the most beautiful examples of baked earth sarcophagi.
The name of the city was originally “Diopolis” (City of Zeus) and then “Rhodas” (Asopos Hill). In the middle of the third century BC., the Hellenistic city was established by Antiochus II of Syria (261-246 BCE) in the region and it was named “Laodikeia” after his wife Laodice.
