What to expect
National Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Albania
The Albanian Philharmonic is established in 1950 part of which are the choir, the symphony orchestra, the opera singers, the ballet troupe, and the conductor. The Philharmonic developed its activity in the building where today is the National Theatre. The development of arts and culture in the country brought the necessity of creating the State Conservatory, the first vocational school that provides the largest musical institution in the country. National Theatre of Opera and Ballet is placed on the building of the Palace of Culture in 1966, where even today continues his activity. National Theatre of Opera and Ballet is a temple of Albanian and International cultivated music. It is the only national institution of this kind that can be compared with the best theatres of Balkan and wider, in the artistic and quality level. It has produced generations of artists, who have made epochs on the Albanian and International stage.
Skanderbeg Statue
The Skanderbeg Square is the main plaza in the center of Tirana, Albania. The square is named after the Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. The total area is about 40,000 square meters. The Skanderbeg Monument dominates the square. The city plan for Tirana was initially designed by Armando Brasini in 1925 and continued by Florestano Di Fausto in a Neo-Renaissance style with articulate angular solutions and giant order fascias. Following the Italian invasion of Albania, the master plan was updated in 1939 by Gherardo Bosio. Many buildings including the Tirana International Hotel, the Palace of Culture, the National Opera, the National Library, the National Bank, the Ethem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower, the City Hall, the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Energy, and the National Historical Museum are situated at the square.
The National History Museum is a historical museum in Tirana, Albania. It was opened on 28 October 1981 and is 27,000 square meters in size, while 18,000 square meters are available for expositions. Above the entrance of the museum is a large mural mosaic titled The Albanians that depicts purported ancient to modern figures from Albania's history. The museum includes the following pavilions: The Pavilion of Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Independence, Iconography, National Liberation Antifascist War, Communist Terror, and Mother Teresa.
The Postbllok (Checkpoint) is a poignant historical monument located in Tirana, Albania. It stands as a somber reminder of the country's communist past, particularly the surveillance and persecution that characterized the regime of Enver Hoxha. The installation features original concrete pillars from a notorious labor camp, an old bunker, and part of the Berlin Wall, symbolizing resistance against oppression. This site is dedicated to the memory of those who suffered during the communist dictatorship and serves as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Albanian people. Visitors to Postbllok are offered a unique insight into the struggles and triumphs of Albania’s journey towards freedom and democracy.
Ish-Blloku commonly Blloku is an upmarket area in Tirana, Albania. It is widely known as an entertainment destination with its boutiques, shops, restaurants, trendy bars, pubs, and cafes. The area is part of the neighborhood of Tirana e Re in southwestern Tirana. During the peak summer months, its trendy bars transfer along the Albanian Riviera. It became very attractive after the fall of Communism in Albania because during the communist period it was a restricted residential area for the members of the Albanian politburo, ordinary Albanians would not be allowed in. On most maps it was unmarked. In Blloku you can still find the residence of Albania’s communist leader Enver Hoxha. Since the fall of communism in Albania, the dramatic growth of new developments has taken place, with many new exclusive flats and apartments. Ish-Blloku has been called the "playground of the young Albanian elite".
