Back in 1723, King Teimuraz and the Kakhetians hid here from the attacks of the Avars, who unsuccessfully tried to besiege and seize the fortress. Ananuri (end of the 16th century), the main stronghold on the Georgian Military Highway, was very popular with travelers, as it is located at the confluence of the Aragvi and the Wajathevi River.
