What to expect
Petaling Street Market
Lively, colorful Chinatown is centered on Petaling Street, known for its fashion shops and a large covered market with produce, clothes and accessories. Local artists sell paintings and crafts at nearby Central Market, where stalls also dish up noodles and curry. Places of worship in the area include the Taoist Guan Di Temple and the 19th-century Sri Mahamariamman Temple, with a facade of carved Hindu deities.
Sri Maha Mariamman Temple
The Sri Mahamariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Founded in 1873, it is situated at edge of Chinatown in Jalan Bandar. In 1968, a new structure was built, featuring the ornate 'Raja Gopuram' tower in the style of South Indian temples
The iconic Sultan Abdul Samad building is located in front of Dataran Merdeka and Royal Selangor Club, along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. It was completed in 1897 by A.C. Norman. During the time of the British administration in Malaya, it was used to house several government departments. Today, this historical building houses the Supreme and High Courts. The building with unique Moorish designs and clock tower is widely photographed by visitors to the city centre. On important occasions, the building is decorated with colourful lights and flags. The historic Dataran Merdeka, where the Union Flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time on 31 August 1957, is also just across the street from the Sultan Abdul Samad building.
Of classic Moorish influenced design, the mosque was built near the site of the early Chinese miners’ settlement and is situated in the triangular-shaped piece of land between the confluence of the muddy Klang River and Gombak River, thus giving the city its name of Kuala Lumpur or Muddy Estuary.
Chinatown
Has fine rows of pre-war shophouses and busy street vendors selling all manner of exotic oddities. The British once named Petaling Street the Monte Carlo of Malaya.
The oldest and most venerable shrines in the city built by Kapitan Yap Ah Loy in 1864 on land that he donated. Yap Ah Loy, a tough leader of the Chinese community and one of the founders of present-day KL, was instrumental in the growth of Chinatown during the 1870s.
