What to expect
The San Martin Square is considered the second most important "Plaza" in the historic center of Lima, built in 1921, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the independence of Peru and to give the city a new air of modernity. It has been the scene of different celebrations and where famous people walked around in the early 20th century. Most of the surrounding buildings have a beaux-arts architecture and they are former bars, restaurants, there is a functional social club, private offices and the iconic "Hotel Bolivar" built in 1924 by the peruvian architect Rafael Marquina, who studied in Cornell University (USA).
Church of La Merced
The minor basilica and convent of Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Lady of Mercy) is a church located in Jirón de la Union (Union Street) which is considered the most commercial street in the historical center of Lima, the religious building was constructed by Brother Miguel de Orenes in 1535, taking the Archangel San Miguel as its owner. The Patroness of the Armed Forces of Peru is venerated in the basilica.
This is the former Peru's National Bank building, from 1922 and now it is a museum, which houses art pieces from different ancient civilizations.
The Torre Tagle Palace is a colonial house built in the early 18th century, it currently serves as the main headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru. It is located in the Ucayali neighborhood in the historic center of Lima, two blocks southeast of the Plaza Mayor.
One of the oldest and biggest catholic convents in Lima, dates from the second half of the 16th century.
The most important square in the historic center of Lima. Every day there is a change of the guard show in the front yard of the Presidential Palace (You will see the show).
