After I short business trip to Pavia, and Bologna, I had one extra day before my flight back home, so I booked a Hili Travel culinary tour, and spent the afternoon with tour guide Stefania around the centre of Modena. Stops included a tasting at the oldest Modena balsamic vinegar producer, learning about "POD" (Original Product Designation) of Parma ham, Parmesan cheeses, and of course with plenty of tasting sessions throughout! Not only is Stefania so knowledgeable on the history of this region's food production and culinary culture, but she is equally knowledgeable on the history of Italy and this area's development across Reggio Emilia, Modena, and Bologna. This was a spectacular guided tour one of the best we have ever been on) as we strolled the streets of Modena, sampling the food and wine of the city/region. Our guide, Stefany, is from Modena and was a font of information about the history, culture, and food of the region. And she was so well-organized, knowledgeable, and entertaining. From explaining to us the various foods/wines she'd arranged for us to sample to the visit with the oldest producer of balsamic vinegar in Modena, our guide made the tour both educational and fun. She really made the effort to connect with us on a personal level, which elevated the entire experience to a different level! And the price is a bargain! We would definitely give this tour two Big Thumbs Up!

We did this tour with Stefania yesterday and it was the best food and highlights walking tour we have done (and we've done a few in many different countries!) Stefania was so passionate and knowledgeable about the food, history and culture of both Modena and the Emilia Romagna region. She showed us a number of the main cultural highlights of Modena and also told us of other places we could visit after the tour if we had time. We tasted balsamic vinegar from a local producer and learnt about why this vinegar is so special. We then went to the markets and saw all of the local produce as well as sampling some local wine and meats. Stefania then took us to a restaurant where we had some delicious pasta with traditional meat ragu. Unfortunately the tour had to finish, but not before we had some delicious local gelato. We thoroughly recommend Stefania and her tour of the food and highlights of Modena.
