Mandir Palace
A Prominent Landmark In This Spectacular Heritage City Is Mandir Palace, Which Had Been The Residence Of The Rulers Of Jaisalmer For More Than Two Centuries. Mandir Palace Is An Exquisitely Carved Architectural Marvel Of Ornate Balconies, Canopies And Delicately Carved Screens That Represent A High Point Of Local Craftsmanship In Its Finest And Purest Form. A Noticeable Feature Of Mandir Palace Is Its Tower Called ‘Badal Vilas’, Which Stands Out As The Tallest Structure Below The Hill-Top City Fort.
Tazia Tower
Tazia Tower and Badal Palace, Jaisalmer Overview Situated at the beautiful Badal Palace complex, the five storey Tazia Tower has its significance in Jaisalmer. Tazia tower is a replica of the mausoleum of various Muslim imams with intricate carvings on the walls of the tombstone that reflects rich ancient art made of thermocol, wood and coloured papers. The Badal Palace near the Amar Sagar Gate has a cloud-like appearance and has the Tazia Tower emerging from it. This tower is entirely different from the usual Rajputana architecture of Rajasthan. These were homes to the royal families of Rajasthan built by the Muslim Craftsmen who gave it a shape of Tazia as a symbol of their religion.
This Nathmal Ji ki haveli was commissioned to serve as the residence of Diwan Mohata Nathmal, the then Prime Minister of Jaisalmer. Maharawal Beri Sal commissioned the construction of this Haveli. The architects of this haveli were Hathi and Lulu who happened to be brothers. There is a very interesting story regarding its construction. It is said that the two brothers started building different facets of haveli simultaneously. In those days there were no such instruments, which could keep a track on continuity and thus when this building came up finally it had irregular shape.
Kothari’s Patwa Haveli is one of the finest, oldest and the largest havelis in Jaisalmer, which is full of artistic work in each corner, be it gracefully carved pillars, façade or the balconies (Jharokhas). Kothari’s Patwa Haveli bears expensive decorated items that were imported from various countries. The murals and interiors have derived inspiration from the Rajputi, Mughal as well as Victorian architecture.
Salim Singh Ki Haveli was built in 1815 by Salim Singh, the prime minister of the kingdom when Jaisalmer was the capital. This mansion was not created with the help of cements and mortar- the stones are connected with strong iron rods. This mansion is famous for its distinctive architecture as it is constitutes 38 gracefully carved balconies. The architecture of this mansion is inspired by dancing peacock. One of the most ambitious constructions of its times, the Haveli is so magnificent, that it even invited the ruler's envy during its era.
Jaisalmer Fort is situated in the city of Jaisalmer, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is believed to be one of the very few "living forts" in the world, as nearly one fourth of the old city's population still resides within the fort. For the better part of its 800-year history, the fort was the city of Jaisalmer.
Surya Gate
The Surya Gate is one of the four entry gates to the 12th century, Jaisalmer Fort. The fort on the Trikuta hill has four successive gates Akai, Surya, Ganesh and Hawa through which the visitors need to pass through. A vital feature of the gate is that it is constructed on a bend, the reason behind building barriers in such a manner is said to stem from military strategies. As elephants were war horses in the ancient era, it took mighty power to break down walls, but with gates situated on a curve, it takes a greater ability to break through.
Jain Temples
The Jain Temples in Jaisalmer are marvelous treasures of the desert city. Having archaeological value as well as religious sentiments associated with it. Dating back to the 12th and 15th century, these temples have intricate designs on it.
Gadisar Lake
A man-made water reservoir, the Gadisar Lake was once the only source of water in Jaisalmer. Constructed by the first ruler of Jaisalmer, Raja Rawal Jaisal, it is surrounded by temples and ghats (banks). One can spend some peaceful time in the serene surroundings of the lake or choose to go boating as well. Boating and watching calm water in their natural surroundings can be a great experience with everyone at Gadisar Lake.
Considered as an important landmark in Jaisalmer, Desert Cultural Centre & Museum exhibits local musical instruments, ancient coins and currency, traditional jewellery of the womenfolk, hunting gear of me, historical displays of rulers, artillery and armour of the bygone era armies. Tourists can enjoy a live puppet show at this place. The place is well maintained by Jaisalmer tourism and has a rare coins related to Jaisalmer history and the past of Rajasthan in whole.
Vyas Chhatri
This atmospheric assemblage of golden sandstone chhatris (cenotaphs), in an old Brahmin memorial ground on a rise on the northwestern edge of town, forms a popular sunset point from which to view the fort. Enter from Ramgarh Rd opposite the Himmatgarh Palace Hotel.
Bada Bagh, also called Barabagh is a garden complex about 6 km north of Jaisalmer on the way to Ramgarh, in the state of Rajasthan in India. Overlooking a mango grove sits a set of royal cenotaphs, or chhatris, of Maharajas of Jaisalmer state, starting with Jai Singh II.
