What to expect
Tel Gezer
We will travel to Tel Gezer an archaeological site that has revealed important finds including the "Gezer calendar." Discovered in 1908, this small limestone tablet features an inscription, describing monthly or bi-monthly periods attributing to each a duty such as harvest, planting, or tending specific crops. An image of the tablet can be found on each bottle of Elul wine. Tel Gezer's historic vineyards, celebrated for centuries, were crucial during Solomon's era as a vital stop on the pilgrimage route from the port of Jaffa to the Temple in Jerusalem. We also will see the 6 chambered gates constructed by King Solomon as described in the Bible. The site is over 5000 years old.
Karmei Yosef
By the small modern village of Karmei Yosef is Elul Organic Vineyard. The first kosher organic winery in Israel was founded by Moshe Elul in 2014. Renowned for its distinctive approach, Elul crafts wine from 13 varieties of organic grapes, without the use of bisulfites, relying on wild yeasts for the fermentation process. The vineyard embraces traditional agricultural methods, steering clear of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or mechanical harvesters. Our visit includes a tour of the vineyard and a luxurious wine tasting paired with cheeses.
Tel Azeka, the backdrop for another biblical tale, provides a panoramic view of the Valley of Elah. It was here that David, armed with a slingshot and stones, slew Goliath. The site was an ancient Judean town mentioned several times in the Bible from the time of Joshua to the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. There was continuous settlement here up to Roman times and we can see tunnels and caves constructed during the Bar Kochba revolt in 135CE. The city then faded from history until 20th-century archeologists discovered the site and excavated it.
Nahal Sorek Reserve
Believed to be where Delilah enticed Samson, and he ultimately met his death at the hands of the Philistines
