The Memnon Colossi The Memnon Colossi are two massive sandstone statues on the banks of the Nile in the city of Luxor, standing in front of the entrance of the Memnon Temple, the tomb of Pharaoh Amenophis III. The statues represent Amenophis III and date from about 1350 BC. In ancient times, it was believed that the statues made mysterious sounds at sunrise, which is why they were named “Memnon”, named after a heroic poet from Greek mythology. The statues are one of the most famous archaeological sites in Luxor and attract many tourists.
