Plaza Cuartel is an outdoor park and a landmark in Palawan that used to be a penal colony during World War II. The Spaniards initially built it as a garrison to protect the country from invasion. During the Japanese Occupation, the Japanese military turned it into a penal colony where they held captive hundreds of American soldiers. Towards the latter part of World War II, when the Japanese knew that they were on the brink of imminently losing the war, they decided to execute the Palawan Massacre. The remains of the American soldiers were brought back to and buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Missouri, USA Plaza Cuartel is now a leisure park and a popular tourist spot in Puerto Princesa. As it is open to the public, tourists visit a part of Philippine History as they witness the dreary garrison and the dark tunnels of Plaza Cuartel. Historical markers are posted on the old walls to remind tourists of the gruesome incident in the place. The Spaniards originally built it.
Puerto Princesa
Don't leave without shopping in these souvenir stores in Puerto Princesa! One of the more popular souvenirs from Palawan are pearls. These pearls cultivated along the island come from different colors and sizes.
Baker’s Hill is a tourist attraction situated atop a hill in Barangay Santa Monica, Puerto Princesa. What started out as a bakery known for its delicious pastries, particularly hopia, it eventually developed into a picturesque park. It is a private property, which the owners graciously open to the public. Baker’s Hill is the perfect go-to place to buy “pasalubong” (gifts to bring home from a trip.) Aside from their popular hopia, they sell mouth-watering baked goods such as crinkles, cakes, bread, pastillas, and pizza among others. It is also a good choice for lunch or snacks. There are restaurants and snack bars in the park that serve delectable cuisine. It is known for “tamilok”, a famous exotic Filipino delicacy, often found in the provinces of Palawan and Aklan. It’s also called woodworm, the wood-eating larvae of many species of beetle.
Rancho Sta. Monica, popularly known as Mitra’s Ranch, used to be a private property. They’ve long been opened to the public from 6AM-6PM. It is among the must-see of PPS because this gives you an astonishing view of Puerto Princesa City There are lots of activities in the area like trampoline, horse back riding, and zip lining!
A place that reflects the mesmerizing beauty of a province that is known as the “Last Frontier of the Philippines”. It showcases a sheer variety of Palawan Butterflies. These free flying butterflies are surrounded with live exhibits of scorpions, green-crested lizards, phasmid and mantises which are their natural predators. It is a window to the natural ecology of these colorful insects. Another added attraction are the rescued endemic wildlife of Palawan. These animals are given the chance of a second life by being rescued from poachers and wouldn’t have survived in the wild because of the probability of suffering the same fate all over again. Like the Palawan Peacock Pheasant and the Palawan Bearcat, these animals are now ambassadors of their own species in the wild. By educating the public about these wild yet gentle creatures the facility promotes public awareness about how our actions as human beings can affect greatly everything in our environment.
The experience can be subject to change due to bad weather or unforseen circumstances. We always endeavour to give you the best possible experience.
