Meeting Point
The octagonal shape of the Byzantine baptisteries is our first monument that we will explore!
P.za Arcivescovado, 1, 48121 Ravenna RA , Italy
End Point
We will finish with a UNESCO Heritage monument! Not bad, isn't it?
Via delle Industrie, 14, 48122 Ravenna RA , Italy
What to expect
The octagonal shape of the Byzantine baptisteries has a strong symbolic value, with the eight sides representing the seven days of creation and the eighth day of resurrection and eternal life, thus connecting to the sacrament of Baptism. At the center of the baptistery is the baptismal font, also octagonal in shape and dating back to the Renaissance era. Ticket Cost: 10,5 € (include also other monuments)
Originally dedicated to the Holy Apostles and later to Saint Peter, the Basilica of San Francesco dates back to the mid-5th century AD. Little remains of the original early Christian church due to numerous renovations over the centuries. We will see also Dante Alighieri's Tomb!
The Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, built at the end of the 5th century, was commissioned by Theodoric, king of the Ostrogoths, to celebrate his victory over the Roman officer Odoacer in 493. Initially it served as the Palatine Chapel or a chapel that was used for religious functions of the sovereign. Ticket Cost: 10,5 € (include also other monuments)
Piazza del Popolo is the beating heart of Ravenna, famous for uniting the streets of the historic center and hosting events and displays, it was built by the Venetians between 1470 and 1480. I'll show you few cool things and stories here: get ready!
The Domus of the Stone Carpets is one of the most significant Italian archaeological sites discovered in recent decades. Particularly noteworthy is the mosaic of the “Dance of the Geniuses of the Seasons” which is located in the central part and represents the Seasons dancing in a circle to the sound of a syringe. Ticket cost: 6€
Designed to bear witness to Byzantine grandeur, it has an octagonal plan, with a distinctive central architecture compared to the basilicas of the time. The Basilica of San Vitale has a simple exterior, but the interior is complex, with curves and rotating surfaces. Ticket Cost: 10,5 € (include also other monuments)
Another incredible UNESCO Heritage monument! The simple exterior of the building symbolizes matter, while the richly decorated interior represents the soul and spiritual light. The dome, decorated with stars and a large golden cross, recalls the theme of Paradise. Ticket Cost: 10,5 € (include also other monuments)
Mausoleo di Teodorico
The Mausoleum of Theodoric is an architectural work of exceptional importance, recognized worldwide with the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built on the orders of Theodoric around 520 AD, the building represents an extraordinary fusion of styles, ranging from the Roman to the Gothic tradition. Ticket cost: 4€
