Setting off at 5.30 the coach picked us up from right outside our hotel. It then did a tour picking up others from their hotels. We then were driven up the mountain to a breakfast stop, hot coffee and a croissant with a bathroom stop. Then back on the coach for 20mins to the entrance tot he gorge. We set off at approx 8.00am and the first 4km are pretty steep down with uneven ground. So this will test your legs. The air smelt of pine and we were in the shade so lovely and cool. The rest of the walk was up and down, through shaded paths with stops for water. Take your own packed lunch for a meal at Samaria abandoned village. Then the rest of the walk is through the narrowest part of the gorge. Since we set off early as we were from Chania we had shade all the way through the gorge and arrived 5 hours later at the Village by the sea before the crowds. We had food and a drink and a paddle then the ferry left at 5.30 to take us along the coast to find our coach back. Drop off was the same but in reverse. A long tiring day and sore legs the next day! But it was very much worth it as the gorge is fantastic, our guide Ingrid was very helpful and made sure everyone was through the gorge. We only saw her at the start and end as we walked quicker. But she filled us in with info on the coach trip back. Expect a tough walk... be prepared with correct footwear and food in a back pack.

The tour company and Adriana were great. So the good rating. We read that the first 2km is steep and rocky. The entire route is nothing but rocks- sticking up sharp and slick rocks. We are a moderately fit 70yr old couple and it was very difficult. SO thankful I rented the walking stick for 3Eu - I really could not have traversed the trail without it!! Wasn’t sure if or how we would make it through but once you’re in- you’re committed. It’s not only rocks but you have to be able to cross the river numerous times on log bridges that are just small logs joined together and no rails. The entire route is all rocks and you have to navigate narrow passages up and down without good places to put your feet. Saw lots of struggling hikers much younger than ourselves, slipping, stopping to treat blisters.i was teased as I had on thick crocs- best choice ever. Keep rocks from hurting my toes and the thick soles saved my feet. My husband’s “ good” tennis shoes did not prove the best protection. It is beautiful and the tour company and bus ride were great. Should have listened to other reviews that revealed the difficulty but seemed like only the first part was bad and walking ten miles isn’t an issue for us, But…. The entire “trail” is extremely bad. We barely made the meeting time for ferry boat ride back- made it by 15 minutes. So we missed the whole beach part at the end LOL The bus ride was lovely to see the beautiful mountains, drive through small villages and gorgeous orange groves. Only very fit people should take this tour and take LOTS of snacks. We didn’t have enough and got really tired toward the end and a lovely French family shared Apple and snacks with us. Whew!

They advertise that the trail is 13km long but this is very wrong! The gorge is 13km long but the trails go zigzag trough the gorge so you are actually walking a distance of approximately 17-18Km trough rough terrain! If your not fit i would not recommend this! Altough the people who measured this trail are really dumb the gorge was beautiful! But the first 3-5km is just as if your walking in Audtria so allot of the trail is not that special. and the fact that you already walked 13km and you still have 4-5km to go kinda ruins the experience.

Phenomenal. It’s largely downhill and flat, and while it IS a bit challenging, it’s doable for 90% of people. We were concerned with the physical aspect because it’s suck a long distance, but if you take your time and go slow, almost anyone can do it! It’s worth every step! And our guide, Ingrid, was amazing!

What to expect

Omalos

Early in the morning, you will be picked up from designated spots around Chania via a luxurious bus and reach the starting point of your tour in Omalos Plateau around 7am. The panoramic view of the gorge from the plateau is a photophile's delight, so after short stop for pictures and/or breakfast, you will hop on the bus and depart for the traditional village of Sougia. It is there that you will hop on a boat and sail along the coast of Crete till you reach Agia Roumeli.

No holiday in Crete is complete without a trip through the 2nd longest gorge in Europe, the Gorge of Samaria. It is the longest and most imposing ravine in the Mediterranean. It is 16.5 kilometers in length from the position of Xyloskalo and terminates at Agia Roumeli in the Libyan Sea. We will arrive around 7 o’clock in the morning and after a short break you will start walking. Descending the 600 wooden steps you will be intrigued by the beauty and serenity of this massive gorge which is shadowed by the white Mountains. You will come across the church of St. Nicolas, built on the ruins of an ancient temple. Afterwards you will reach “Portes” or “Iron Gates”, the narrowest pass of the gorge. The hike ends at Agia Roumeli.

Half way down the gorge lies the old village of Samaria, which has a telephone for communication with the police, a pharmacy, and two mules to transport injured persons.
In the village of Samaria, take a quiet walk around and you may catch a glimpse of the endangered kri‐kri. They are usually very friendly towards people!
Infants are required to sit on an adult’s lap
It is advisable to bring the following items with you: sunscreen, sunglasses and hat
It is important to stay hydrated, so bring a bottle of water (you can refill it in the gorge's springs) and a light snack (fruits etc.)
