What to expect
Tunisia
Upon arrival in Tunisia, you will meet with Across Africa Tours representative who will help you clear any formalities or customs and tranfer your to your hotel (booked by your expenxe) Accommodation: self-booked hotel (I recommend Belvedere Fourati Hotel)
Tunis
After breakfast, head to the old medina of Tunis (A cultural tour, not a shopping one). Stroll in its narrow alleys and admire its architecture. Learn more about the old medina with your travel guide and visit its must-see: Zitouna mosquée / medresas /Kasbah boulevard…etc.Head to the military museum and visit to learn more about Tunisian history. Continue to Lagoulette and enjoy a grilled fish meal. At 2h30 Pm, head to Carthage, the Roman city, and visit its different components (Byrsa hill, Antonine baths, Punic sanctuary…etc.).Enjoy a free time to stroll in Sidi Bousaid, the blue and white village dominating the bay of Tunis and offering a unique view. Back to your hotel Accommodation: self-booked hotel(I recommend Belvedere Fourati Hotel)
After breakfast, drive northwest to visit the archaeological site of Utica, one of the oldest cities in the western Mediterranean, founded by the Phoenicians in 1101 BC. Next, stop in the Andalusian town of Testour, stroll through its alleys, and admire its unique architecture. Visit the Great Mosque’s minaret, home to a one-of-a-kind clock where the hands rotate counterclockwise and numbers are upside down. After being out of order for years, the clock has been restored since December 2014. Continue to Dougga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Tunisia’s most prestigious archaeological site. Enjoy lunch at a 3-star hotel (famous for its wild boar). In the afternoon, head to Kairouan, the holy city, and explore its old medina (UNESCO World Heritage). Dinner at the hotel. Accommodation: Self-booked hotel (I recommend Kasbah Kairouan, half board).
Kairouan
Spend the day with a visit to great mosquee of Kairouan and Barber Maisoleum (Sidi Sahbi). Our knowlegable guide will tell you more stories behind the construction of the two sites you will be visiting. Head to Tozeur through Gafsa and mid-day lunch on the way at a local restaurant. Arrive in Tozeur and visit its old medina. Depending on the day, their will be a Possibility of a carriage tour to visit the city’s oldest palm groove (extra). In the evening bck your booked hotel for dinner and overnight at the hotel Accommodation: self-booked hotel (I recommend Palm Beach Tozeur or Diar Abou Habibi or Anantara)
Tunisia
After breakfast, depart to visit the stunning mountain oases of Chebika, known for its Berber village and mountain springs, popular with filmmakers. Continue to Tamerza to see its famous waterfall and explore the great canyons of Mides. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant with a typical Tunisian menu. Afterward, head to the sandy village of Sabria, crossing the Chott Djerid salt lake, the largest in North Africa (photo break). Visit Debebecha, the petrified sand site, and enjoy a sunset over the vast sand dunes. Option for a camel ride to watch the sunset (extra). At 7:30 p.m., witness the preparation of sand bread (bread baked under sand and embers). Dinner will be at the camp, followed by a musical evening around the campfire. Overnight in a tent under the stars. Accommodation: Night in a desert camp (half board).
Chenini
Breakfast and departure to matamata, the Berber village. Stop and taste a good rosemary tea. Visit a homestay cave house where you will be greeted with tea, olive oil, and honey served with home-brewed hand. Discover these houses dug underground and this way of life and admire the generosity and modesty of these cave dwellers.Continue to the Berber village of Toujane and enjoy a photo stop. Head to Chenini, the Berber village, and visit its different components (houses dug horizontally in the mountain, mosquée…etc.).Visit the seven dormant mosquée of Chenini and learn about its legend.Go to your accommodation and overnight Accommodation: self-booked hotel (I recommend Ksar Ouled Debbeb)
Djerba Island
After breakfast depart to Djerba. Photo stop at the salt lake of Chahbania, also known as ‘Sabkhet El Melah’.Arrive at Djerba and head to Guellela, the pottery village. Visit the traditions museum of Guellela and learn more about the island traditions and habits. Visit a local workshop and assist in a pottery making demonstration.Stop at the port harbor to see the pirate ship.Mid-day lunch at a local restaurant.Visit « The Gharib », the oldest Jewish synagogue in northern Africa. Stroll in the alleys of Djerba Hood: Djerbahood is an urban art event during which artists worldwide take over the Tunisian village of Erriadh on the island of Djerba to produce 250 works created for the occasion. The Galerie Itinerrance de Paris launched it in June 2014. Continue to Houmt Souk, the city center, and enjoy a free time to stroll in its narrow alleys.Head to your hotel dinner and overnight Accommodation: self-booked hotel (I recommend Rym Beach Hotel)
Hammamet
Depart to El Jem through the highway. Arrive in El Jem and have a mid-day lunch. After your lunch,Visit the Roman coliseum of El Jem. Visit El Jem museum. Continue to Hammamet and settle at your hotel. Dinner and overnight Accommodation: self-booked hotel(I recommend Hasdrubal Thalassa & Spa Hammamet)
Cape Bon
Visit Haouaria, located at the tip of Cap Bon, where Ras Adar rises 350 meters above sea level, offering a beautiful view of the Mediterranean and Sicily, just 140 km away. Haouaria, a town of 10,000 people, is renowned for falconry, a tradition shared by many locals. From March, falconers capture birds using nets and traps, training them until they are released after the hunting season in summer. About 3 km from the town, explore the caves of Ghar el-Kebir, dug mainly during Roman times to extract stone for Carthage monuments. Visit the Punic caves and Kerkouan, the Punic archaeological city. Continue to Korbous, known for its hot springs and Hammams, where you can swim or enjoy a spa treatment. Head to the airport to end the tour.
