What to expect
Embekka Dewalaya
Embekke temple was built by King Vikramabahu III to honor King Mahasena who ruled Sri Lanka from 277 to 304 AD. The Devalaya (temple) has three main areas; the Sanctum of Garage, Dancing Hall, and the Drummers Hall which is beautifully decorated with splendid wood sculptures and carvings of dragons and fierce battles between lions and elephants.
Lankatilaka Temple
Lankatilaka Vihara (monastery), the best example of architecture during the reign of King Buwanekabahu IV who made Gampola the capital of Sri Lanka during the mid-fourteenth century. Built on natural rock, the temple mixes stone, plaster, and wood within its uniquely Sinhalese architectural style and is home to many ancient paintings which draw people from afar.
Temple of the Gadaladenia
Gadaladeniya temple which is made almost exclusively from stone and is considered one of the largest stone temples on the island. It is another example of an imposing temple built during the reign of King Buwanekabahu IV during the mid-fourteenth century and following the Sinhalese architecture style from the Polonnaruwa era. The main shrine in the temple has a seated Buddha statue underneath a dragons arch (‘Makara Thorana’) which is richly decorated.
The Kandy Dancing Show is a vibrant showcase of Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage, held in the heart of Kandy. This mesmerizing performance features traditional Kandyan dances, each with its own unique history and significance. Dancers in elaborate costumes move gracefully to the rhythmic beats of traditional drums, bringing to life ancient rituals and stories. The show includes a variety of performances, from the energetic Ves dance to the dramatic fire-walking and fire-dancing acts that captivate the audience with their intensity and skill. The graceful movements, accompanied by the haunting sounds of traditional instruments, create an unforgettable experience that immerses you in Sri Lanka's cultural traditions. Held in the evening, this cultural show offers a perfect end to a day of exploring Kandy, allowing you to witness the artistry and dedication of the dancers who have preserved these ancient traditions for generations.
Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya
Bahirawakande Temple, also known as the Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue, is a prominent landmark in Kandy, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its lush surroundings. Located on a hilltop just a short distance from the city center, the temple is home to a towering statue of Lord Buddha, which stands majestically, visible from various parts of Kandy. The serene atmosphere at the temple provides a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle, making it a perfect spot for meditation and reflection. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, admire the intricate architecture, and learn about the significance of the Buddha statue in Sri Lankan culture.
