Montserrat

Montserrat is a mountain top monastery situated on top of an unusual rock mountain. It is the highest point of the Catalan lowlands. Montserrat monastery hosts “la Moreneta”, also called Black Madonna. The legend says that the benedictine monks found the statue, and they could not move the statue to build their monastery, so they decided to construct it around the statue. Montserrat was designated as a National Park in 1987. Nowadays, it is a site of pilgrimage for people around the world. Once in Montserrat, enjoy a 45-minute small group guided tour, and then you will have 2 hours to explore on your own. You can visit the Museum, taste the monastery’s homemade liquor, go for an easy walk to Saint Miguel's cross for an incredible viewpoint, go up the Sant Joan Funicular, take wonderful pictures, buy local products from the farmer's market, and more.

Abadia de Montserrat

The origin of the monastery is uncertain, but it is believed that the Virgin of Monsterrat (La Moreneta) was found around 880. (8.30 am and 1.30 pm tours include tickets to La Moreneta). According to the legends, the monks built the monastery around the statue. The monastery still functions to this day with over 70 monks. The basilica of Montserrat began its construction in the 16th century, and now houses an art museum. It is also the place where la Escolania, one of the oldest Boys’ Choirs in Europe, performs during religious ceremonies (you can listen to them on the 9.30 am tour).

Very good but short visit to Montserrat. Miro was excellent and provided a lot of excellent knowledge about Spanish history and the monastery. My only suggestion is that the tour should offer dress guidelines as the men in our group would have been more comfortable in shorts, and find out in advance who wants to take the funicular. Because by the time we got to the line there was not enough time to go there and back. We walked to the cross instead, which was a beautiful hike.

Quick visit to tantalize you to come back. Felipe was a lovely tour guide who gave us the highlights of our visit to Montserrat and of the Morenita. We only had an hour and a half to visit one of the many things to do on the mountain. We chose the funicular to San Joan and it did not disappoint. Although check your time the lines could be long. We could have easily stayed another hour or two. If you are short on time and don’t want to take two trains and a gondola 🚠 up to Montserrat from Barcelona then this may be the way to go. This was not an in depth tour but just fine for a hot day.

Great tour of Montserrat. Edu, Felipe and Daniel were great. Very knowledgeable tour guides. A must visit when in Barcelona.

Funny and interesting guides Eduardo, Daniel and Felipe. The view was spectacular and the cathedral with the Moreneta was beautiful. We had a guided tour of the cathedral and informations about the history of Barcelona and Montserrat. We also had almost 2h of free time where we could visit the museum, take the funicular, walk to the cross of St-Michael, visit the Farmer’s Market and/or have a snack/buy souvenirs in the shops.

The actual tour and logistics were very nice. The checking in to see which guide you had was chaos and stupid. Instead of the guides calling off the names in their group, each person had to line up and wait to ask each guide until they found the right one
