A Day of Discovery

Today was a beautiful blend of culture and nature, a perfect reflection of what makes Yakushima so special. I wanted to delve a little deeper into the island's history and also witness one of its most stunning natural landmarks. It was a day that left me feeling more connected to this enchanting place.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Michikusa. It was a cozy start, fueling us up for the day's adventures. I savored the traditional Japanese breakfast set, a comforting and nourishing way to prepare for exploring Yakushima's wonders.

Journey to Senpiro Falls

After breakfast, we set off to Senpiro Falls. The drive itself was scenic, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the coastline. As we approached the falls, the anticipation grew. I had seen pictures, but I knew nothing could truly capture the real experience.

The parking area was conveniently located, and from there, it was a short walk to the viewing area. Even from a distance, the falls were impressive. Water cascaded down the jagged valley with such force, a 60-meter drop over a massive granite rock. The sheer scale of the falls against the backdrop of the valley was breathtaking.
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

Lila was particularly captivated by the falls, her eyes wide with wonder. It’s moments like these, seeing the world through her innocent perspective, that make these family trips so worthwhile. Hans-Peter, ever the photographer, busied himself trying to capture the perfect shot, while I simply stood in awe, letting the scene imprint itself in my memory.

There are a couple of viewing platforms near the car park. We took advantage of these, climbing the stairs to get different perspectives of the falls and the surrounding landscape. The climb back up those stairs—around 200, I believe—was a bit of a workout, but the views were more than worth the effort. From the platforms, we could also see the ocean in the distance, adding another layer of beauty to the vista.

Unfortunately, the walkway to get closer to the falls was closed due to a landslide, which was a bit disappointing. However, the view from afar was still magnificent. The falls are set in a valley carved out by nature over millennia, and the energy of the water was palpable. The monoliths of rock surrounding the falls added to the drama. It felt like being in a sacred space, a testament to the power and beauty of nature.

Immersing in Local Culture

Our next stop was the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. I was eager to learn more about the island's past and the traditions of its people. The museum is located near the Miyanoura River, making it easily accessible.

The museum itself is a single-story building, but it is packed with exhibits that tell the story of Yakushima. From original Edo Period documents to wood and wicker folk tools, there was a wealth of artifacts on display. I was particularly interested in the exhibits related to festivals on the island, including costumes and a rice straw rope used in a tug-of-war festival between different villages. It gave me a sense of the community spirit that has shaped Yakushima over the centuries.

Lila enjoyed seeing the exhibits of Yakushima’s native monkeys and deer, which are smaller subspecies of their mainland cousins. There was even a wooden monkey trap on display, which fascinated her. It’s important for her to understand the relationship between people and nature, and this museum offered a glimpse into that dynamic.

While many of the descriptions were in Japanese, the museum provides a laminated sheet in English, which was helpful. It allowed us to delve deeper into the exhibits and understand the context behind the artifacts. The museum also had a section dedicated to the nearby volcanic island of Kuchinoerabu Island, which added another layer of interest.

Outside the main building, there was a reconstruction of a rural house where roof tiles were made. These tiles, known as hiragi, were an important part of Yakushima's economy during the Edo period, used to pay taxes and trade for essential goods. It was a tangible reminder of the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the island's inhabitants.

Spending a couple of hours at the museum gave me a greater appreciation for Yakushima’s unique cultural heritage. It's not just about the stunning natural landscapes; it's also about the people who have called this island home for generations and their traditions.

A Culinary Afternoon

For lunch, we decided to try At Pesca, a spot known for its tasty tempura meals. It was a great choice! The tempura was perfectly crispy and light, and the vegetable tempura bowl was both delicious and filling. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with a fun Hawaiian music playing in the background. It was a delightful change of pace and a perfect way to recharge after our morning explorations.

In the evening, we had dinner at Kotobuki. The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, but it's well worth the effort to find. The setting is outstanding, with a traditional Japanese interior that feels like stepping back in time. It’s located a few kilometers south of the Kusugawa Onsen, and when you see a small children’s play area with a wooden swing and slide, you know you’re close.

The food at Kotobuki is a set menu, dependent on the day’s fresh ingredients. Every dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The ambiance of the restaurant, combined with the exquisite cuisine, made for a truly memorable dining experience.

Nightcap at Ganta

To cap off the evening, Hans-Peter and I ventured out to Ganta, a local bar. Lila was happy to stay back at our accommodation, reading a book and enjoying some quiet time. Ganta is a lively spot, open late by Yakushima standards, located near the Miyanoura harbor. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.

The bar had a welcoming atmosphere, and we enjoyed chatting with some of the locals and fellow travelers. I tried some local spirits, while Hans-Peter opted for a Japanese beer. It was a great way to immerse ourselves in the local culture and get a sense of the island’s nightlife.

As I reflect on the day, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Yakushima’s diverse offerings. From the awe-inspiring Senpiro Falls to the cultural insights at the museum, every moment was enriching. And the delicious meals at At Pesca and Kotobuki added another layer of enjoyment to the day. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the East China Sea Observatory and the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse, eager to see more of this remarkable island. I'm also hoping to find some time to visit Wood Shop Kikori [Kikori], where I've heard they have some beautiful local crafts. I am eager to continue uncovering the treasures of Yakushima, one day at a time.
