Friday Finds: Business, Gardens, and Brews in Harar

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of bustling commerce, tranquil gardens, and the ever-present undercurrent of Harari culture that makes this city so unique. It's amazing how much you can experience in a single day, especially when you're open to the unexpected detours and hidden gems that await around every corner.

Our day began, as many do here, with a hearty breakfast at the Arab Ali Hotel. The injera was fresh, the wot flavorful, and the atmosphere buzzing with the energy of locals starting their day. It's always a pleasure to return to places that offer a genuine taste of home. Sharing a meal with Hans-Peter and Lila in this setting felt particularly special, a reminder of why I wanted to bring them here in the first place—to connect with the traditions that shaped me.

After breakfast, we ventured out to the Jamal Jawar Business Center. While I wouldn't typically include a business center on our travel itinerary, this place was different. It was a microcosm of Harar's economic life, a place where you could find everything from traditional handicrafts to modern goods. Lila was particularly fascinated by the colorful fabrics and intricate beadwork on display. I found myself drawn to the energy of the vendors, their faces etched with stories of resilience and entrepreneurship.

We spent a good hour wandering through the center, soaking in the sights and sounds. I even managed to pick up a few souvenirs for friends back in Munich—small tokens of Harar's vibrant culture. It was a reminder that travel isn't just about seeing famous landmarks; it's about connecting with the people and the rhythms of everyday life.

Next on our list was the Sharoo Garden, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the business center. The garden was a lush oasis of green, a place where we could relax and recharge. Lila loved exploring the winding paths, pointing out the different flowers and plants. Hans-Peter, ever the pragmatist, appreciated the well-maintained grounds and the sense of tranquility that permeated the space.

As we strolled through the garden, I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of finding moments of peace amidst the chaos of travel. It's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of sightseeing, but sometimes the most meaningful experiences are the ones where you simply slow down and appreciate the beauty around you.

For lunch, we decided to try Riyadeiliyas, a restaurant known for its authentic Ethiopian cuisine. The food was delicious, a symphony of flavors and spices that danced on my tongue. We shared a large platter of injera and various wots, each dish offering a unique culinary experience. Lila, surprisingly, was quite adventurous, trying everything with gusto. I was so proud of her willingness to embrace new tastes and textures.

As we ate, I couldn't help but think about my own culinary journey, from the simple meals of my childhood to the sophisticated dishes I've encountered in Germany. Food, I realized, is a powerful connector, a way to bridge cultures and create shared memories. I was happy to share this part of my heritage with my family.

In the evening, we had dinner at ZEWDE SEID(HOTEL), another culinary gem in Harar. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, perfect for a relaxed evening meal. The staff were incredibly friendly, eager to share their knowledge of Ethiopian culinary traditions. We savored flavorful stews and freshly baked injera, all made with locally sourced ingredients. It was a fitting end to a day filled with cultural immersion and gastronomic delights.

Later, seeking a bit of local flavor, Hans-Peter and I ventured to Harar Brewery S.C. for a drink. I remember when Heineken took over the brewery back in 2011. It's fascinating to see how global influences blend with local traditions here. The brewery itself was a hive of activity, a testament to Harar's growing economy. We sampled some of the local brews, enjoying the lively atmosphere and the camaraderie of the patrons. It was a chance to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from simply being present, open to the unexpected, and willing to embrace the rhythm of a new place.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude. Harar had welcomed us with open arms, offering a glimpse into its rich culture and vibrant spirit. I was especially grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, to create memories that would last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Haramya Lake and Charleville Square, continuing our exploration of Harar's natural and urban landscapes. I'm eager to see what new adventures await us, what new stories we'll uncover. I have a feeling that Harar still has many secrets to reveal.

Reflecting on the day, I realize that the true essence of travel lies not in ticking off landmarks, but in immersing oneself in the local culture, connecting with the people, and savoring the simple moments. It's about allowing yourself to be transformed by the experience, to see the world through a different lens. And in that regard, Harar has already exceeded my expectations.

As I sit here writing, the sounds of Harar drift through the window—the distant call to prayer, the laughter of children playing in the street, the gentle hum of the city as it prepares for another night. It's a symphony of life, a reminder that I'm a part of something bigger than myself. And that, I think, is the greatest gift of travel.

Thinking about the contrast between my life in Munich and the vibrant chaos of Harar is interesting. In Munich, life is orderly, predictable, and efficient. Here, life is spontaneous, unpredictable, and often chaotic. Yet, there's a certain charm to the chaos, a sense of authenticity that I find incredibly appealing. It's a reminder that there's more than one way to live, more than one way to find happiness.

I also find myself reflecting on the challenges of bridging two cultures, of raising a child who is both German and Ethiopian. I want Lila to understand her heritage, to appreciate the richness and complexity of both cultures. I want her to be proud of who she is, to embrace her unique identity. It's a daunting task, but I'm committed to doing my best.

Hans-Peter has been such a wonderful travel partner, embracing this journey with an open mind and a willingness to learn. He's not always comfortable with the unfamiliar, but he's always willing to step outside his comfort zone. His support means the world to me, and I'm grateful to have him by my side.

I'm also thinking about my work as a translator and cultural consultant. It's a job that allows me to connect with people from different backgrounds, to bridge cultural gaps and promote understanding. It's a job that I find incredibly rewarding, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the world, however small.

As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of anticipation. I know that Harar has more to offer, more to teach me. And I'm ready to listen, to learn, and to grow. This journey is not just about rediscovering my roots; it's about discovering new possibilities, new perspectives, and new ways of being. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

One thing that struck me today was the resilience of the Harari people. Despite the challenges they face, they remain optimistic, resourceful, and full of life. Their spirit is infectious, and it's impossible not to be inspired by their determination. I'm reminded of my own grandmother, who faced countless hardships in her life but always maintained a positive attitude. Her strength and resilience continue to inspire me to this day.

As I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with a sense of peace and contentment. Today was a good day, a day of discovery, connection, and cultural immersion. And I know that tomorrow will bring new adventures, new challenges, and new opportunities to grow. Harar, you have captured my heart, and I'm eager to see what else you have in store for me.

The air here is different, carrying scents of spices, coffee, and frankincense. It's a sensory overload, but in the best possible way. It's a reminder that I'm far from home, in a place that is both familiar and foreign. And that's exactly what I wanted. I wanted to step outside my comfort zone, to challenge my assumptions, and to see the world through a different lens. And Harar is certainly delivering on that promise.

I'm also struck by the sense of community here. People seem to be more connected, more willing to help each other out. It's a stark contrast to the individualism that often prevails in Germany. I wonder if it's a reflection of the shared challenges they face, or simply a cultural difference. Whatever the reason, it's something that I find incredibly appealing. It's a reminder that we're all in this together, and that we need each other to thrive.

As I reflect on the day, I realize that travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about seeing yourself in a new light. It's about discovering hidden strengths, challenging limiting beliefs, and expanding your sense of what's possible. It's about becoming a better version of yourself. And in that regard, this journey to Harar is already proving to be transformative.
