Rediscovering Roots: A Family Journey to Harar
Day 9: A Day of Serenity and Spice in Harar
Discover the tranquil beauty of Haramaya Lake and the vibrant flavors of Harar's culinary scene on a memorable day.
Tranquility and Tastes of Harar
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of serene landscapes and bustling city life that painted a vivid picture of Harar. As our trip nears its end, each day feels more precious, filled with experiences I want to hold onto forever. I'm so glad I could share this part of my heritage with Hans-Peter and Lila.
Our morning began with a hearty Ethiopian breakfast at Student Caffe. I always appreciate the simple, authentic flavors of home. Lila was especially fond of the *firfir*, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a strong cup of Ethiopian coffee – a must, of course. It’s funny how even after all these years in Germany, he still prefers Ethiopian coffee over anything else.
With full stomachs and eager hearts, we set off for Haramya Lake. The drive itself was an experience, passing through vibrant countryside scenes. I remember visiting Haramaya Lake as a child, it was such a lively place then. Sadly, Lake Haramaya isn't what it used to be. I remember swimming in it as a child. It was once a source of life for the surrounding communities, but it dried up due to overuse and environmental changes. It’s now a shadow of its former self, a stark reminder of the impact we can have on our environment. Though it was disheartening to see the lake in its current state, it was also a moment of reflection. I explained to Lila the importance of taking care of our planet, of respecting the resources we have. It was a valuable lesson, seeing the consequences firsthand.

“Sometimes, the most profound lessons are learned not in the most beautiful settings, but in the places that remind us of what we stand to lose.”
Despite the lake's condition, there was still a sense of peace about the place. We walked along the shores, observing the birds that still frequent the area. Lila, ever the curious one, collected interesting stones and asked endless questions about the lake's history and the efforts being made to restore it. I was glad to see her engagement and concern. It's important for her to understand her heritage and the challenges it faces.
After a reflective morning, we headed back to Harar for a completely different experience: an immersion into the city's vibrant heart. We had lunch at EK Fast Food and Juice, a surprising choice, I know, but Lila was craving something familiar, and they had delicious fresh juices. It was a welcome change of pace, and the food was surprisingly good. I even enjoyed a *sambusa*, a savory pastry filled with spiced lentils – a local favorite.

Our next stop was Charleville Square, the central hub of Harar. The square was alive with activity – vendors selling everything from colorful fabrics to fragrant spices, locals chatting and laughing, and the general hustle and bustle of daily life. It was a feast for the senses. I bartered for some beautiful handmade scarves, while Hans-Peter captured the scenes with his camera. Lila, of course, was fascinated by everything, especially the piles of colorful spices.

I made sure to stop by Hilina Shop, a local store known for its traditional Harari crafts. I wanted to find a special memento of our trip, something that Lila could take back to Germany and remember her time in Harar. I found a beautiful, intricately woven basket, perfect for storing her treasures. I also picked up some Harari coffee, known for its unique, bold flavor. I can't wait to share it with my friends back in Munich.

For dinner, we decided to try Taajir kamaal, a restaurant known for its traditional Tacaca cuisine. The food was rich and flavorful, a true taste of Harar. I especially enjoyed the *hulbat marakh*, a hearty goat stew cooked with fenugreek and spices. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with contrasts.

As we walked back to our relatives' house, the sounds of Harar slowly faded into the night. I thought about tomorrow, our last day in Harar. We plan to visit Abraha Beta and Imam Ahmed Square, soaking in as much of the city's history and culture as we can before we leave. I also plan to visit Ebetel bar. I am eager to try some local drinks before we leave.
This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a journey of rediscovery, a chance to reconnect with my roots and share them with my family. It’s been a reminder of the importance of preserving our heritage and protecting our planet. And as I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with gratitude for this incredible experience.
I’m excited for what tomorrow brings, but a part of me already aches at the thought of leaving. Harar, with its vibrant colors, rich history, and warm people, has captured my heart once again. And I know, without a doubt, that I’ll be back.
In the meantime, I am excited to share my experiences with you. Keep following my blog!
