As our Ethiopian adventure draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. Harar, the city of my birth, has welcomed my family and me with open arms, offering a profound connection to my past and a vibrant glimpse into its present. Today, our final day, was a tapestry of cultural immersion, culinary delights, and heartfelt moments that I will forever cherish.

We began our day with breakfast at Z@k Cafe and Restaurant. The aroma of freshly brewed Ethiopian coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. I ordered *ful*, a traditional fava bean dish, while Hans-Peter opted for *injera* with a spicy stew. Lila, ever adventurous, tried a bit of both, her face lighting up with each new flavor. It was the perfect way to energize ourselves for the day ahead.

After breakfast, we decided to visit Abraha Beta አብርሃ ቤታ. I remember visiting this place as a child, and I was eager to share its beauty with Lila. The garden was a haven of tranquility, a stark contrast to the bustling city outside. We strolled through the lush greenery, admiring the vibrant flowers and listening to the soothing sounds of birdsong. Lila was particularly fascinated by the traditional Harari architecture, with its intricate woodwork and colorful facades. It was a moment of serene beauty, a peaceful interlude before diving back into the city's vibrant heart.

Next on our itinerary was Imam Ahmed Square, the central hub of Harar's social and commercial life. As we stepped into the square, we were immediately swept up in a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and smells. The market was in full swing, vendors hawking their wares, from colorful textiles and fragrant spices to handcrafted jewelry and traditional pottery. I bartered for a beautiful shawl, its intricate embroidery a testament to the skill of Harari artisans. Lila was captivated by the vibrant scene, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in the kaleidoscope of colors and the cacophony of sounds.

For lunch, we ventured to Jugal Cafe&Fast Food, a local eatery known for its delicious and affordable fare. We ordered *Hulbhat marakh*, a spicy stew made in a rich tomato sauce, with potatoes and lots of coriander. Lila enjoyed some *sambusas*, savory pastries filled with lentils and spices. It was a satisfying meal, a taste of authentic Harari cuisine that left us feeling energized and ready to continue our exploration.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the city, we made our way to Ebetel Bar, a local watering hole known for its lively atmosphere and traditional music. I remember sneaking out to places like this when I was younger! Hans-Peter and I enjoyed a couple of St. George beers while Lila sipped on a refreshing juice. The bar was filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to soak up the vibrant ambiance and enjoy the sounds of Ethiopian music. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing, a chance to relax and reflect on our experiences.

Before dinner, we took a moment to simply wander through the ancient alleyways of Harar Jugol, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The walls, painted in vibrant colors, whispered stories of centuries past. The air was thick with the scent of incense and spices, a sensory tapestry that evoked a sense of timelessness. We paused to admire the intricate details of the traditional Harari houses, their wooden facades adorned with elaborate carvings and colorful accents. It was a moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to appreciate the unique beauty and cultural richness of this remarkable city.

Our final dinner in Harar was at Sharif Resturant, a Halal establishment renowned for its authentic Ethiopian cuisine. We feasted on *injera* with a variety of flavorful stews, each dish a testament to the culinary traditions of the region. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the staff eager to share their knowledge of the local cuisine. It was a fitting end to our culinary journey, a final taste of the flavors that have shaped my identity and connected me to my roots.

This journey has been more than just a vacation; it has been a rediscovery of my heritage, a reconnection with my family, and a celebration of the vibrant culture that has shaped me into the woman I am today. Sharing this experience with Hans-Peter and Lila has made it all the more special, creating memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Munich, carrying with us the sights, sounds, and flavors of Harar. While I am eager to return to the comforts of home, I know that a part of me will always remain in this enchanting city, forever bound to its history, its culture, and its people.

This trip has reminded me of the importance of honoring one's roots. It has instilled in Lila a sense of pride in her Ethiopian heritage, and it has strengthened the bonds of family that connect us across continents. As I reflect on this journey, I realize that the true treasures of life are not material possessions, but rather the experiences we share and the memories we create with those we love. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
