Exploring Shirakawa-go: A Family Adventure in Japan's Historic Village
Day 6: Art, Crafts, and Culinary Delights: A Day of Discovery in Takayama
Discover Takayama's cultural heart: Explore art, crafts, and savor local cuisine for an immersive Japanese experience with family.
A Day Immersed in Takayama's Charms
Today was a delightful blend of art, culture, and gastronomy in the enchanting town of Takayama. I am so happy to share this experience with you. Away from the well-trodden paths of Shirakawa-go, we ventured into the heart of the Hida region, eager to uncover its hidden gems. It was a day filled with unexpected discoveries, heartwarming encounters, and, of course, delicious food.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Shiraogi. The restaurant was lovely, and we enjoyed local cuisine. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. I had a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. Ama enjoyed some rice and seaweed, while Klaus opted for a Western-style breakfast with toast and eggs. I must admit, it felt good to have something other than rice and miso for breakfast for once, even though I do enjoy it. I still miss my kontomire stew and banku back home, but this will do for now.

Cultural Immersion at Hida Takayama Activity and Exchange Hall
Our first stop was the Hida Takayama Activity and Exchange Hall. This vibrant hub is dedicated to promoting cultural exchange and education, offering a fascinating glimpse into the rich heritage of the Hida region. As a software developer with a keen interest in cultural preservation, I was particularly excited about this visit. The hall is housed in a historical building and features demonstrations of traditional crafts such as Itto-bori carving and Hida Shunkei. We even had the opportunity to participate in a Sarubobo-making workshop ! Ama loved picking out the colors for her doll, and Klaus, ever the architect, was meticulous about getting the proportions just right. My Sarubobo turned out a little wonky, but it was made with love. We learned that Sarubobo dolls are traditional amulets, representing happiness and protection, especially for children. It was a fun and meaningful experience for the whole family.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Artistic Exploration at Jin Homura Art Museum
Next on our itinerary was the Jin Homura Art Museum. Nestled in the serene village of Shirakawa, this museum showcases the works of the artist Jin Homura, who lived in a Gassho-style house in the Kidani district of Shirakawa. The museum itself is a beautiful example of Gassho-zukuri architecture, which I found interesting. The museum features about 50 of Homura's powerful works, characterized by vivid colors and dynamic brushstrokes. I was struck by the contrast between the contemporary art and the traditional setting. It was inspiring to see how Homura's art was influenced by the surrounding landscape and the unique architectural style of the Gassho-zukuri houses. Ama was surprisingly engaged, pointing at the colors and shapes, and Klaus appreciated the artistic techniques and the way the art interacted with the space. The museum is located next to the village parking lot.

Lunch at Morizen
By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. We decided to try Morizen, a restaurant known for its Hida cuisine. It was a bit away from the main Gassho Village, providing a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. We savored Hida beef skewers, a local delicacy, and Ama happily munched on some udon noodles. The Hida beef was incredibly tender and flavorful. I could taste the freshness of the ingredients, and it was clear that the restaurant took pride in using local produce. Klaus, being the adventurous foodie, tried some local sake, while I stuck to water, mindful of my responsibilities as the designated driver. After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through the village, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the traditional houses.

Evening Relaxation at Shiroyamakan
As evening approached, we decided to unwind at Shiroyamakan, a local bar. It was the perfect place to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. While I enjoyed a glass of local craft beer, Ama amused herself with a small toy we brought along, and Klaus chatted with some of the locals. The bar had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and it was a great opportunity to connect with the community and learn more about their way of life. I learned about the Takayama Autumn Festival, which is considered one of Japan's most beautiful festivals. Apparently, elaborate floats parade through the streets of the Old Town, decorated with intricate carvings and illuminated by lanterns. The Takayama Autumn Festival will be held on October 9-10.

Dinner at Tanaka-ya
For dinner, we chose Tanaka-ya, a restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. It was a delightful culinary experience. We indulged in a multi-course meal featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. The presentation of each dish was exquisite, and the flavors were both delicate and complex. Ama enjoyed a simplified version of our meal, with steamed rice, vegetables, and a mild fish dish. Klaus and I savored every bite, appreciating the artistry and the attention to detail that went into each course. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights.

As we head back to our cozy accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Takayama had charmed us with its blend of art, culture, and gastronomy, and we had created memories that would last a lifetime. I am also grateful to be sharing this experience with my family. This trip is truly a wonderful way for us to bond and learn about a new culture.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Takayama Jinya, a historical government building, and the Jinya-mae Morning Markets. I'm particularly excited about the morning markets, as I love browsing local produce and trying new foods. I'm also looking forward to learning more about the history of the region at Takayama Jinya. It promises to be another day filled with discovery and adventure.
I wonder what tomorrow will bring. I'll be sure to share it with you all!
