Art and Ancient Walls: A Day in Taroudant
Today was a vibrant mix of art, history, and delicious food, truly capturing the essence of Taroudant. It’s days like these that make traveling with family so rewarding, as we all experience something new and create lasting memories together. From exploring an opulent palace to wandering through ancient gates and enjoying local cuisine, Taroudant continues to surprise and delight us.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Snack Tchika. It's a small, unassuming place, but the reviews online were promising. We fueled up with some local pastries and strong coffee, a perfect start to a busy day of exploring. Ama enjoyed a simple croissant, and Klaus and I savored some of the more traditional Moroccan sweets. It’s funny how the simplest meals can sometimes be the most memorable, especially when you're sharing them with loved ones in a new place.
After breakfast, we set off to Palais Claudio Bravo. This was, without a doubt, the highlight of our day. The Palais is an experience that transcends mere sightseeing; it's an immersion into the world of art and beauty. As we approached, the grandeur of the palace was immediately striking. The architecture is a stunning blend of Moroccan tradition and artistic flair, reflecting the unique vision of its creator, Claudio Bravo. The gardens surrounding the palace were meticulously maintained, with vibrant flowers and lush greenery creating a tranquil oasis.

Walking through the halls of Palais Claudio Bravo felt like stepping into another world. Every room was filled with Bravo’s artwork, from paintings and sculptures to intricate details in the architecture itself. The attention to detail was astounding; each piece seemed to tell a story, inviting us to delve deeper into Bravo's creative mind. Ama was particularly fascinated by the sculptures, pointing and giggling at the various shapes and forms. It was heartwarming to see her so engaged and curious.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Klaus, with his architect's eye, was captivated by the design and structure of the palace. He spent a considerable amount of time admiring the way Bravo had seamlessly integrated art into the very fabric of the building. For me, the experience was deeply inspiring. As a software developer working with AI for sustainable agriculture, I often find myself immersed in the technical aspects of my work. Being surrounded by such creativity and beauty was a refreshing reminder of the importance of art in our lives.
We wandered through the various rooms, each with its own unique character and charm. The staff were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, sharing stories and insights about Bravo's life and work. They made us feel like honored guests, adding to the overall sense of magic and wonder. Palais Claudio Bravo is more than just a place to visit; it's an experience that touches the soul.
Leaving the Palais, we felt a sense of awe and inspiration. It was time to explore another facet of Taroudant's rich heritage: its ancient walls. We made our way to Bab Lahjer, one of the city’s historic gates. The walls of Taroudant are often referred to as the “Grandmother of Marrakech,” and standing before Bab Lahjer, it was easy to see why. The gate is a massive structure, a testament to the city's long and storied past. As we walked through the gate, I couldn't help but imagine all the people who had passed through it over the centuries – traders, travelers, and locals, each with their own stories and dreams.

The history of Bab Lahjer is palpable. Taroudant served as an important trading post and strategic military location. The gate stands as a reminder of the city's resilience and its role in shaping the region's history. Ama enjoyed running along the base of the walls, her laughter echoing against the ancient stones. It was a beautiful moment, connecting the past with the present.
After our historical exploration, it was time for lunch. We stopped at Café-Restaurant Bab El Kasbah, a charming spot with a menu full of Moroccan delights. Klaus and I decided to try the tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew cooked in a clay pot. The aroma alone was enough to make our mouths water. The tagine was rich and flavorful, a perfect blend of spices and tender meat. Ama enjoyed some simple grilled chicken and couscous, which she happily devoured. The café had a lovely, relaxed atmosphere, and we enjoyed watching the locals go about their day as we savored our meal.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in a little bit of modern cuisine. We headed to SuchiCafé Restaurant Perla for dinner. The name itself was intriguing – a combination of sushi and Moroccan flavors. I was curious to see how they would blend these two distinct culinary traditions. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a contemporary decor that was a refreshing change from the more traditional settings we had visited earlier in the day.

The menu offered a variety of sushi rolls and Moroccan dishes, and we decided to try a bit of both. Klaus and I shared a sushi platter, while Ama opted for some chicken skewers. I also ordered a Moroccan salad, wanting to experience the local flavors alongside the sushi. The sushi was surprisingly good, fresh and well-prepared. The Moroccan salad was a delightful mix of vegetables and spices, a refreshing counterpoint to the richness of the sushi. It was a unique and enjoyable dining experience, showcasing the versatility of Taroudant's culinary scene.
To cap off our evening, we ventured to Complexe El Kasbah, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. While Klaus and I enjoyed some mint tea, Ama was content playing with her toys, reliving the day's adventures. The bar was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant and convivial atmosphere. It was a perfect way to unwind and soak in the energy of Taroudant.

As we walked back to our guesthouse, I reflected on the day's experiences. Taroudant had once again exceeded our expectations, offering a perfect blend of art, history, and culinary delights. It's a city that truly has something for everyone, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Centre de la mémoire historique de la résistance and Bab El Kasbah, continuing our exploration of this fascinating city. And of course, we’ll be sure to find some more delicious local eats along the way. I'm particularly excited to explore the crafts at Craft Médical, hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home. Good night from Taroudant!
I am so glad we remembered to bring our lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes and sunscreen. It gets pretty hot during the day.
This trip is turning out to be an unforgettable experience, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Every day here is a new adventure, and I'm cherishing every moment with Klaus and Ama.
