Family Cultural Exploration in Kyoto
Day 3: A Day of Ancient Echoes and Culinary Delights in Kyoto
Step back in time exploring Kyoto's iconic Kiyomizu-dera, charming streets, and savoring exquisite meals. A day filled with culture and flavors.
Whispers of the Past
Today in Kyoto felt like stepping directly into a historical tapestry, woven with threads of ancient traditions and vibrant modern life. The air was thick with the scent of cherry blossoms and the echoes of footsteps on ancient stones. Klaus, Ama and I navigated through a day that engaged all our senses, leaving us with memories we'll treasure long after we've left Japan.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi. The ambiance was modern and inviting. We savored a mix of traditional Japanese and Western breakfast items, providing a perfect start to a day of exploration. The restaurant’s location along the Kiyamachi street offered beautiful views of the canal, a serene backdrop as we planned our day's adventure.

First on our itinerary was the majestic Kiyomizu-dera. The journey to the temple was an experience in itself. As we ascended towards the temple, the streets buzzed with activity. Despite the crowds, the climb was manageable, and I appreciated the blend of old and new Kyoto that surrounded us. We even managed to navigate the stroller along the paved path, a welcome relief.

Kiyomizu-dera, perched on the hillside, stood as a testament to time. Founded in 778, the temple’s history is as rich as its architecture is stunning. The main hall, a National Treasure of Japan, offered a panoramic view of Kyoto that was simply breathtaking. The iconic wooden stage jutted out, allowing us to gaze over the city and the lush greenery below. I could only imagine the vibrant colors during the spring and fall.
Ama was fascinated by the Koyasu Pagoda, its three stories rising gracefully among the trees. We learned that it is said to bring about easy and safe childbirth, a sweet blessing for families. Wandering around the temple grounds, we found a small hall filled with nearly 200 stone statues of Jizo, the protector of children and travelers. It was a poignant reminder of the care and hope that permeates this sacred place.
The beauty of Kiyomizu-dera lies not only in its grand structures but also in the quiet corners where history whispers and hearts connect.
After immersing ourselves in the grandeur of Kiyomizu-dera, we strolled down Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. These stone-paved paths, lined with traditional shops and teahouses, transported us back in time. The atmosphere was enchanting, and we couldn't resist exploring the various crafts and treats on offer.
Discover Sannenzaka, a historic street in Kyoto, where traditional charm meets stunning views and delightful local cuisine.
Sannenzaka, also known as the Three-Year Slope, was particularly charming. The beautifully maintained stone pavement and retro-style buildings created a nostalgic ambiance. We admired the Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki pottery, each piece reflecting the artistry and meticulous craftsmanship of Kyoto. The aroma of street food wafted through the air, tempting us with traditional sweets like Yatsuhashi and savory treats like obanzai.
Experience Ninenzaka's historical charm with traditional wooden structures, vibrant shops, and serene tea houses in the heart of Kyoto.
Ninenzaka, or Two-Year Hill, was equally captivating. This gently sloping street, lined with wooden machiya houses, offered a glimpse into Kyoto’s bygone era. We explored the artisan shops, discovering handcrafted souvenirs and unique boutiques. It was fascinating to learn that Ninenzaka is intrinsically linked to Kiyomizu-yaki pottery, with many shops featuring exquisite ceramic works.
For lunch, we ventured to Komefuku. This restaurant offered a delightful culinary experience. The lunch set was a great value, featuring fresh tempura and sushi that delighted our taste buds. It was clear that Komefuku is a local favorite, as we were surrounded by Japanese diners enjoying their meals.

In the afternoon, we found ourselves drawn to Kazari Nishiki, a charming souvenir store known for its exquisite selection of Japanese crafts. The store exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a plethora of options that reflected the rich cultural heritage of Japan. I was particularly drawn to the delicate ceramics and beautifully crafted textiles. The staff was incredibly helpful, sharing stories about the origins and significance of the various items, which added a personal touch to our shopping experience.

Kazari Nishiki also emphasizes sustainability and supports local artisans, which resonated deeply with my values. I found a beautiful hand-painted fan that I knew my mother would adore, and a set of small, intricately designed bowls that would be perfect for serving spices at home. Knowing that our purchases contributed to the preservation of traditional crafts made the experience even more meaningful.
As the day drew to a close, we headed to Kikunoi Roan for dinner. This Michelin-starred restaurant promised an unforgettable kaiseki experience. The ambiance was serene and refined, reflecting the artistry and precision of Japanese cuisine. Each dish was a masterpiece, a harmonious blend of flavors and textures that showcased the season's best ingredients.

The presentation was stunning, each plate a work of art that appealed to both the eyes and the palate. It was a culinary journey that deepened our appreciation for Japanese culture and gastronomy.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine with its thousands of vibrant torii gates, and the serene Tofuku-ji Temple. We might even cap off the evening at The Common One Bar Kyoto.
As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore Kyoto's beauty and heritage. The blend of ancient temples, charming streets, and exquisite cuisine has created a tapestry of memories that I will cherish forever. Kyoto, with its timeless allure, has captured a piece of my heart, and I eagerly anticipate what tomorrow will bring.
The day reminded me of a quote by Alan Watts:
The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
And that's exactly what we did today, embracing the dance of Kyoto.
Kyoto has a number of rules and etiquette that should be followed. One thing to keep in mind is refraining from blocking the road. Especially in crowded areas, it is important to be mindful of others and avoid obstructing traffic. Additionally, it is essential to avoid littering and to dispose of trash properly in designated areas. Lastly, it is crucial to seek permission before taking photos or videos, especially in areas where photography may be restricted or where it may intrude on the privacy of others. By observing these guidelines, visitors can help preserve the beauty and tranquility of Kyoto while showing respect for its residents and cultural heritage.
Experience a family-friendly journey through Kyoto's timeless beauty, exploring temples, gardens, and cultural treasures while enjoying modern comforts.
