Today in Kyoto felt like stepping directly into a historical tapestry, woven with threads of ancient traditions and vibrant modern life. The air was thick with the scent of cherry blossoms and the echoes of footsteps on ancient stones. Klaus, Ama and I navigated through a day that engaged all our senses, leaving us with memories we'll treasure long after we've left Japan.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi. The ambiance was modern and inviting. We savored a mix of traditional Japanese and Western breakfast items, providing a perfect start to a day of exploration. The restaurant’s location along the Kiyamachi street offered beautiful views of the canal, a serene backdrop as we planned our day's adventure.

First on our itinerary was the majestic Kiyomizu-dera. The journey to the temple was an experience in itself. As we ascended towards the temple, the streets buzzed with activity. Despite the crowds, the climb was manageable, and I appreciated the blend of old and new Kyoto that surrounded us. We even managed to navigate the stroller along the paved path, a welcome relief.

Kiyomizu-dera, perched on the hillside, stood as a testament to time. Founded in 778, the temple’s history is as rich as its architecture is stunning. The iconic wooden stage jutted out, allowing us to gaze over the city and the lush greenery below. I could only imagine the vibrant colors during the spring and fall.

Ama was fascinated by the Koyasu Pagoda, its three stories rising gracefully among the trees. We learned that it is said to bring about easy and safe childbirth, a sweet blessing for families. Wandering around the temple grounds, we found a small hall filled with nearly 200 stone statues of Jizo, the protector of children and travelers. It was a poignant reminder of the care and hope that permeates this sacred place.

After immersing ourselves in the grandeur of Kiyomizu-dera, we strolled down Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. The atmosphere was enchanting, and we couldn't resist exploring the various crafts and treats on offer.

It was fascinating to learn that Ninenzaka is intrinsically linked to Kiyomizu-yaki pottery, with many shops featuring exquisite ceramic works.

For lunch, we ventured to Komefuku. This restaurant offered a delightful culinary experience. The lunch set was a great value, featuring fresh tempura and sushi that delighted our taste buds. It was clear that Komefuku is a local favorite, as we were surrounded by Japanese diners enjoying their meals.

In the afternoon, we found ourselves drawn to Kazari Nishiki, a charming souvenir store known for its exquisite selection of Japanese crafts. The store exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a plethora of options that reflected the rich cultural heritage of Japan. I was particularly drawn to the delicate ceramics and beautifully crafted textiles. The staff was incredibly helpful, sharing stories about the origins and significance of the various items, which added a personal touch to our shopping experience.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine with its thousands of vibrant torii gates, and the serene Tofuku-ji Temple. We might even cap off the evening at The Common One Bar Kyoto.

As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore Kyoto's beauty and heritage. The blend of ancient temples, charming streets, and exquisite cuisine has created a tapestry of memories that I will cherish forever. Kyoto, with its timeless allure, has captured a piece of my heart, and I eagerly anticipate what tomorrow will bring.
