Day 8: A Day of Shrines, Pearls, and Brews in Ise Shima
Discover Ise Shima's spiritual heart at Toyouke Daijingu, marvel at Shima Pearl Bridge, and savor local flavors with Aisha on our cultural journey.
Spiritual Sanctuaries and Coastal Wonders
Today in Ise Shima was a beautiful blend of cultural immersion and scenic exploration. Aisha and I embraced the day with open hearts, ready to absorb the spiritual essence and natural beauty this region is known for. From ancient shrines to modern marvels, and delightful culinary experiences, today was a tapestry of unforgettable moments.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant La Mer. The innovative seafood French cuisine was a delightful start, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients of Ise Shima. Executive Chef Hiroe Higuchi's creations were a testament to the region's culinary charm, setting a high bar for the gastronomic adventures to come.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the Shima Pearl Bridge. Driving along Pearl Road, which connects Toba and Shima, offered incredible coastline views. The azure sky and lush greenery made for a refreshing drive. The bridge itself was an impressive sight, a testament to modern engineering amidst the serene landscape. It was a perfect spot for photographs, capturing the essence of Ise Shima's coastal beauty.

Travel is not just about seeing new places, but about opening your mind to new perspectives.
Next on our itinerary was a visit to Toyouke Daijingu (Ise Jingu Geku, Outer Sanctuary). This shrine, dedicated to Toyouke Omikami, the deity of food, housing, and clothing, is believed to have been established over 1500 years ago. It was fascinating to learn that Toyouke provides the food for Amaterasu Omikami, the Sun Goddess enshrined at the Inner Shrine. The Outer Shrine is traditionally visited before the Inner Shrine, a custom we were keen to honor.

Walking through the gravel-covered paths, surrounded by tall trees, was a deeply calming experience. The architecture, almost untouched by mainland Asian influences, was a sight to behold. We also saw the Kazenomiya, dedicated to the god of wind, the Tsuchinomiya, dedicated to the god of the land, and Takanomiya, dedicated to the spirit of Toyouke. Each shrine exuded a unique sense of peace and history. We learned that, like the Inner Shrine, the Outer Shrine is rebuilt every 20 years, with the next rebuilding scheduled for 2033. This tradition, which has been upheld for over 1,300 years, ensures the shrine remains in a state of constant renewal.
For lunch, we indulged in the local delicacy of Matoya oysters at Matoyakaki Terrace. This oyster bar restaurant offered a delightful array of oyster dishes, each prepared with a unique flair. The oysters from Matoya Bay were incredibly fresh and flavorful, a true representation of the region's seafood bounty. Aisha and I savored every bite, enjoying the exquisite taste and the beautiful views from the terrace.

Later in the evening, we ventured to Glamp Ocean Iseshima for a relaxing drink at their bar. This glamping site, with its dome-shaped accommodations and seaside location, offered a unique ambiance. Though we didn't stay overnight, the atmosphere was inviting, and the drinks were a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. Aisha and I enjoyed the sea breeze and the tranquil setting, reflecting on the day's adventures.

For dinner, we decided to try Ise Kadoya Beer, a local brewery known for its craft beers. Ise Kadoya Beer has a long history, dating back to 1575 when it started as a teahouse. In 1997, the 21st generation owner began crafting beer, blending traditional techniques with a scientific approach. I opted for their IPA, while Aisha enjoyed a lighter ale. The beers were flavorful and refreshing, a perfect complement to the delicious food. It was a great way to support a local business and experience the unique flavors of Ise Shima.

As the day drew to a close, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared. Ise Shima had revealed its spiritual heart and natural beauty to us, creating memories that would last a lifetime. The blend of ancient traditions and modern attractions made for a captivating journey, one that resonated with both Aisha and me.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kodenchi, the site of the Previous Sanctuary, and Ujibashi Bridge. We're also looking forward to visiting Pearl Falco Ise Gallery. It promises to be another day filled with cultural discoveries and scenic wonders.
I am particularly excited about visiting Kodenchi (Site of Previous Sanctuary) (Geku Outer Shrine). This site holds significant historical value, as it marks the location where the shrine was previously located before being rebuilt. It offers a glimpse into the past and a deeper understanding of the shrine's evolution.
Additionally, I am intrigued by Ujibashi Bridge, which is renowned for its architectural beauty and spiritual significance. Crossing this bridge is said to symbolize the transition from the mundane to the sacred, making it a meaningful experience for visitors. I am eager to capture the essence of this transition through my photography, preserving the moment for reflection and remembrance.
Finally, I am looking forward to exploring Pearl Falco Ise Gallery, where I hope to learn more about the art of pearl cultivation and admire the exquisite craftsmanship of pearl jewelry. Aisha has a keen eye for design, and I believe she will appreciate the intricate details and unique beauty of the pearls on display.
I am confident that tomorrow will bring even more enriching experiences and unforgettable moments as we continue our exploration of Ise Shima. This journey with Aisha has been nothing short of magical, and I am grateful for every opportunity to share these adventures with her. The memories we are creating here will undoubtedly strengthen our bond and deepen our appreciation for the world around us.
As I reflect on the day, I am reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences and seeking out the beauty in every corner of the world. Ise Shima has offered us a unique opportunity to connect with nature, culture, and each other, and I am excited to see what tomorrow holds.
Until then, I bid you goodnight from this enchanting corner of Japan. May your own travels be filled with wonder and discovery.
