Today, our journey through Nigeria took us to the heart of Oyo State, where we explored the captivating Idere Hills. This adventure was more than just a hike; it was an immersion into the rich cultural tapestry and natural beauty of this region. From savoring local delicacies to conquering scenic trails, every moment was a cherished experience shared with my family.

The day began with an early start, fueled by excitement and a hearty breakfast at Kapadoccia Lagos. This cave-themed restaurant offered a unique ambiance, setting the perfect tone for our day of exploration. The kids, Tunde and Funke, were particularly fascinated by the décor, reminiscent of the ancient caves of Cappadocia in Turkey. Aisha and I enjoyed the blend of Turkish and Nigerian cuisine, a delightful fusion that mirrored the diverse culture of Lagos. The top-notch customer service added to the experience, making it a must-visit destination.

The journey is the destination, and today, that journey led us to breathtaking heights and unforgettable cultural encounters.

After breakfast, we set out for Idere Hills, a drive that took us through the undulating landscapes of Oyo State. As we approached the hills, the scenery transformed into a mesmerizing panorama of rock formations and lush greenery. Idere Hills, recently commissioned as a tourist attraction, boasts a rich history dating back over 600 years. The kids were eager to start hiking, their adventurous spirits ignited by the promise of caves and panoramic views.

Our first stop was the Iyara Wall, a natural passage formed by two vertical mountains. These towering rock walls, standing approximately 18 feet high and 40 feet long, served as the city gate, managed by the city guards. Walking through this corridor, we felt a sense of stepping back in time, imagining the ancient people of Idere using this passage as their primary entrance and exit. The kids were thrilled, their imaginations running wild with stories of ancient warriors and hidden treasures.

Next, we explored the Aroye, a three-layered rock formation that once served as a post for the secret police. From this vantage point, the guards could easily observe and communicate with the palace, ensuring the safety of the community. The panoramic view from Aroye was breathtaking, offering a sweeping vista of the town and its surroundings. I captured several photographs, wanting to preserve the beauty of this historical landmark.

The hike continued through varied terrains, from dense forests to open grasslands, each step revealing new wonders. We spotted several rare bird species, their vibrant colors adding to the allure of the environment. The kids were fascinated by the diverse flora and fauna, their curiosity piqued by every new discovery. I was reminded of our hikes in Gatineau Park back in Ottawa, but this experience was unique, imbued with the spirit and history of Nigeria.

As we explored, our guide shared local legends and folklore, adding a mystical dimension to the landscape. We learned about the Odi Ilu, a defense wall constructed over 200 years ago, showcasing the architectural prowess of the ancient inhabitants. We visited the Iso Eleko Idere, where the famed Eleko Idere of Irosun meji in IFA panegyrics sold her pap, a testament to the town's rich cultural heritage.

For lunch, we savored traditional Nigerian cuisine at NOK by Alara. This contemporary Pan-African restaurant in Victoria Island is known for reinventing classic African dishes. We ordered the infamous Abula, a local favorite, along with assorted meat and gbegiri. The stew was the star of the show, perfectly complementing the amala. Aisha and the kids thoroughly enjoyed the meal, immersing themselves in the flavors of Nigeria.

After lunch, we made a stop at Rukayya shopping complex, hoping to find some souvenirs to remind us of our trip. While the complex was bustling with activity, we enjoyed browsing the local crafts and textiles. I was particularly interested in finding some traditional Yoruba attire for the family, a tangible connection to our heritage.

As the day drew to a close, we had dinner at Jevinik Place, a restaurant known for its authentic Nigerian dishes. We indulged in native soup, coconut rice, and abacha, each dish bursting with flavor and tradition. The generous portions and high-quality ingredients made it a memorable dining experience. The kids especially loved the coconut rice, its fragrant aroma filling the air with warmth and comfort.
