A Day of Wonders in Todra Gorge

Today was everything I hoped for and more as we ventured deeper into the heart of Morocco's Todra Gorge. The majestic landscapes, combined with the warmth of the local Berber culture, created an unforgettable experience for my family and me. It was a day filled with exploration, delicious food, and moments that we will cherish for a lifetime.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant AL-HILAL. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee were the perfect start to our adventurous day. Aisha and I enjoyed some traditional Moroccan pancakes, while Tunde and Funke opted for a more familiar continental breakfast. Fuelled up, we set off for our main adventure: a hike through the Todra Gorge Hike.

The gorge itself is a sight to behold. Towering limestone cliffs rise dramatically on either side, creating a natural cathedral that humbles you with its scale. The gorge has been carved over millennia by the Todra and Dades Rivers. As we walked deeper into the gorge, the temperature dropped slightly, offering a welcome respite from the Moroccan sun. The weather in December is quite pleasant, with daytime highs around 18-20°C, perfect for hiking.

The hike was relatively easy, and even Funke, who is not the biggest fan of strenuous activity, enjoyed the walk. Tunde, ever the adventurous one, was already planning a rock-climbing expedition for our next visit. I was content with capturing the stunning scenery with my camera, while Aisha simply soaked in the beauty of nature.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After our hike, we decided to immerse ourselves further in the local culture with a visit to Kasbah Taborihte.

Located a short distance from the gorge, the kasbah offered a glimpse into Morocco's rich history and architecture. While Kasbah Taborihte is a hotel, exploring the area gave us a sense of the traditional Berber life.

We learned that Kasbahs in Morocco have a rich history, often serving as fortified residences and centers of power. Originally constructed as military barracks, these impressive structures stand as testaments to the architectural ingenuity of their time. The intricate details reflect the cultural influences that have shaped the region over centuries.

For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Cafe Central.

The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and the aroma of Moroccan spices filled the air. I decided to try the tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, while Aisha opted for the grilled chicken. Tunde, predictably, went for the kefta tagine, and Funke enjoyed a refreshing salad. The food was delicious, and the mint tea was the perfect accompaniment.

After lunch, Aisha suggested we do some shopping at Boutique Aicha Shop Tinghir.

Aisha and Funke were in their element, haggling for souvenirs and local crafts. I managed to pick up a beautiful Berber carpet for our living room back in Ottawa. Tunde, of course, found a stall selling local spices and spent a good half-hour chatting with the vendor about the different blends and their uses.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Auberge restaurant Tizgui for dinner.

This restaurant is known for its authentic Berber cuisine and stunning mountain views. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the panoramic vista. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home.

I decided to try the Berber pizza, a local specialty, while Aisha enjoyed a vegetarian tagine. Tunde, ever the carnivore, ordered a mixed grill, and Funke opted for the couscous. The food was exceptional, and the homemade hot sauce was a particular highlight. As we savored our meal, we reflected on the incredible day we had experienced. The Todra Gorge had exceeded all our expectations, and the warmth and hospitality of the Berber people had touched our hearts.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Viewpoint gorge todra and Aventures Verticales Maroc. I am particularly looking forward to capturing the panoramic views from the viewpoint, while Tunde is already itching to try his hand at rock climbing. Aisha is keen to relax and soak in the scenery, and Funke is hoping to find some more unique souvenirs.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Morocco has a way of captivating your senses and leaving you with memories that last a lifetime. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings and to continue exploring this beautiful country with my loved ones.

The Todra Gorge has shown us the beauty of nature and the richness of Berber culture. It's a place where you can disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life and reconnect with what truly matters: family, nature, and the simple joys of life.

I am reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, the famous Moroccan explorer:

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

Indeed, today's adventure has left me speechless and eager to share our story with all of you. I hope that our experiences inspire you to embark on your own adventures and discover the wonders that await you in Morocco and beyond.

Until tomorrow, dear readers!

P.S. I almost forgot! I did forget to pack a portable phone charger and a first-aid kit! Note to self: always double-check the essentials, especially when traveling with family! Perhaps I can find one at the Boutique Aicha Shop tomorrow.
