Day 4: Todra Gorge: A Day of Views, Vertigo, and Culinary Delights
Experience Todra Gorge's breathtaking views, thrilling rock climbing, and delicious Moroccan cuisine on a memorable family adventure.
A Gorge-ous Day in Todra
Today was a sensory overload in the best possible way. From the towering viewpoints that made my head spin to the adrenaline-pumping sight of climbers scaling the cliffs, and the comforting aromas of Moroccan cuisine, Todra Gorge delivered an unforgettable experience. I'm so glad I could share it with my family, creating memories we'll cherish long after we've returned to Ottawa.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Cafe Oasis Rose. Aisha and I enjoyed some traditional Moroccan coffee while Tunde and Funke opted for mint tea. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists alike starting their day. The cafe's location made it easy to reach, and the staff were incredibly patient and friendly. I decided to try a Kefta tagine, while Aisha chose a vegetable tagine. The kids both went for a simple omelet. It was the perfect fuel for the day ahead.
After breakfast, we headed straight for the Viewpoint gorge todra. The drive itself was stunning, with the landscape transforming into a dramatic canyon. As we ascended, the views became more and more breathtaking. Reaching the viewpoint, I have to admit, my fear of heights kicked in a little. The gorge stretched out before us, a massive split in the earth with towering red cliffs. The sheer scale of it was humbling. Aisha, ever the supportive wife, held my hand as I took in the vista, snapping photos to capture the moment. Tunde and Funke, of course, were fearless, posing for dramatic shots near the edge. I was just happy they didn’t ask me to join them!

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are the ones that challenge us the most.
Next, we decided to experience the adventurous side of Todra Gorge with Aventures Verticales Maroc. While I admired the climbers from afar, Tunde, with his youthful energy, was eager to try his hand at rock climbing. Aisha and Funke decided to join him, encouraged by the guides from Aventures Verticales Maroc. I watched, a mix of pride and anxiety swirling within me, as they were provided guidance on scaling the gorge's walls. The guides were fantastic, ensuring everyone's safety while providing encouragement and expertise. Todra Gorge is known as a climber's paradise, with over 400 fully bolted routes for both single and multi-pitches, so there truly is something for everyone.

It was fascinating to witness the Berber culture interwoven with the landscape. The local Berber people are known for their hospitality, and it's common for them to invite visitors into their homes for tea. I was particularly struck by the traditional red clay architecture and the intricate irrigation systems they use to bring water from the river to their fields.
For lunch, we chose RESTAURANT BAB TODRA. The setting was beautiful, and the food was delicious. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the friendly service. I opted for a traditional tagine, while Aisha enjoyed a Moroccan salad. Tunde and Funke, still buzzing from their climbing adventure, devoured a kefta and pizza respectively. The restaurant had a beautiful interior and outdoor seating, which made it a great experience.

After lunch, we took a stroll through the gorge, soaking in the stunning scenery. The towering cliffs, carved by the Todra River over millennia, were truly awe-inspiring. We walked along the river, enjoying the cool air and the sound of the water. I couldn't help but think about the Berber tribes and traders who had used this passage for centuries. The gorge has served as both a natural fortress and a sacred site for the local communities.
As the sun began to dip, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at Restaurant les jardins de todgha. This restaurant is known for its stunning views and serene atmosphere. We sat on the terrace, sipping mint tea and enjoying the panoramic view of the Todgha Valley. The gardens were beautiful, and the air was filled with the scent of flowers. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure.

For dinner, we decided to try the Moroccan Table Restaurant. This charming eatery offered an array of traditional dishes. Chef Hamou and his team provided warm hospitality, making us feel right at home. I had heard great things about their tagines, so I ordered a chicken tagine. Aisha chose a fresh Moroccan salad, while Tunde and Funke opted for couscous. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent.

As we headed back to our accommodation, we reflected on the day's adventures. Todra Gorge had exceeded all our expectations. The views, the climbing, and the food had all been incredible. But more than that, we had experienced the warmth and hospitality of the Berber people, gaining a deeper understanding of their culture and way of life.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Gorges du Todrha and Dadès Gorges. I'm excited to see what other wonders await us in this beautiful country. I’m also hoping to pick up a few souvenirs at Depot Nomade. Aisha is particularly interested in finding a Berber carpet, and I’m hoping to find a nice piece of pottery. It's a great opportunity to support the local artisans and bring home a tangible reminder of our time in Morocco.
Todra Gorge has definitely left its mark on our hearts. It's a place where adventure meets culture, where stunning landscapes meet warm hospitality. If you ever have the chance to visit, don't hesitate. You won't be disappointed.
I must admit, I am starting to miss Ottawa a little bit. I miss my chess games at the park, and I’m even starting to miss the Canadian winter! But I know that when I return, I’ll be bringing back a wealth of memories and experiences that will last a lifetime.
