Finding Serenity in Pelion's Hidden Waters

Today was a day of quiet reflection and natural beauty, a welcome change of pace after the vibrant explorations of the past few days. Mount Pelion continues to surprise me with its hidden gems, and today, I sought solace in its flowing waters and the promise of a lively evening.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Mountain Top Cafe - Pelion. Fuelled by traditional Greek coffee and a slice of their famous orange pie, I set off to explore the Spring of Manas. The cafe was a cozy haven, the staff incredibly welcoming, offering blankets as the morning air was crisp. It reminded me of the warmth Aisha brings into our home, always making sure everyone is comfortable and cared for.

The drive to Portaria was scenic, the landscape a tapestry of greens and browns under the November sky. The Spring of Manas, a hidden gem near Portaria, was everything I had hoped for and more. The air was filled with the soothing sounds of flowing water, surrounded by lush greenery. It was a tranquil escape, a place where one could easily lose themselves in the beauty of nature. I took a leisurely stroll through the nearby forests, enjoying the fresh air and the vibrant wildflowers that still clung to life despite the season. The spring itself was crystal clear, the water gently cascading over rocks, creating a melody that calmed my soul.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

I spent a considerable amount of time at the Spring of Manas, simply sitting by the water, listening to its song, and reflecting on my journey so far. It struck me how vital such springs were to local communities historically. They weren't just sources of water but also places of gathering, of life. It made me think of Wamba, my birthplace, and the importance of water sources in our community. These springs were the lifeblood, and seeing this one in Pelion, so carefully preserved, was truly heartening.

For lunch, I ventured to Pelion Plaza Ἑστιατόριο. This restaurant was near the sea, offering a delightful array of Greek and Mediterranean dishes. I opted for fresh seafood, grilled to perfection, and enjoyed it with a glass of local wine. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed, making it a perfect midday stop. It's always fascinating to experience the local cuisine; it tells you so much about the culture and the people.

After lunch, I decided to explore the Stream at Poros in Zagora. The drive to Zagora was beautiful, offering panoramic views of the coastline. The Stream at Poros was another tranquil oasis, with serene waters flowing gently through a verdant landscape. I took a walk along the stream's banks, enjoying the soothing sounds and the picturesque scenery. Birdwatchers would have been in paradise, with diverse species flitting among the trees. The Stream at Poros offered a perfect blend of nature and culture, with Zagora's traditional architecture and charming streets nearby.

As evening approached, I made my way to Pagasitikos Restaurant for dinner. This family-run taverna, established in 1934, is one of the oldest and most cherished in the region. Located next to the beach in Kala Nera, it offered a wonderful selection of local specialties. I savored traditional Greek dishes, each bite a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Pelion. The owner, Kostas, was incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about the restaurant's history and the region. It felt like dining with family, a truly authentic Greek experience.

To cap off the evening, I decided to experience the nightlife at Alter Ego Rock & Blues Bar. Though a bit of a drive, I was intrigued by the prospect of live music. Nestled in Volos, this bar was a haven for music lovers. The cozy interior, adorned with vintage memorabilia, created a nostalgic vibe. The music was electrifying, a mix of local talent and touring musicians that had the crowd dancing and singing along. I enjoyed a local Greek wine, swaying to the rhythm and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. It was a night of pure enjoyment, a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places but also about experiencing new sounds and rhythms.

As I reflect on today, I am grateful for the tranquility I found in Pelion's waters and the energy I discovered in its music. It was a day of balance, of connecting with nature and with people, of finding peace and excitement in equal measure.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the beaches of Kato Gatzea and Lea's beach, hoping for more serene moments by the sea. I might even pick up a souvenir at Mediterraneo Art Store. Until then, goodnight from Mount Pelion.
