A Whistle-Stop Tour of Pelion's Past
The crisp mountain air filled my lungs as I embarked on a journey that promised to be both scenic and steeped in history. Today was all about embracing the charm of Mount Pelion, a region renowned for its natural beauty and mythological significance. My plan was to ride the The Little Train of Pelion, explore the quaint village of Vizitsa, and immerse myself in the local culture and cuisine. It was a day designed to capture the essence of this enchanting corner of Greece, and I couldn't wait to see what it had in store.

My day began early, fueled by excitement and a strong cup of Greek coffee. I made my way to the starting point of my Pelion adventure: the famed The Little Train of Pelion, also known as “Moutzouris”. It was a journey back in time, aboard a narrow-gauge railway that once connected the remote villages of Mount Pelion with the coastal city of Volos. The train itself, with its vintage carriages, whispered stories of a bygone era, a time when this railway was the lifeline of the region.
The November air was brisk, a reminder that autumn was in full swing here in Greece. I was glad I'd packed layers, as the temperature in Mount Pelion can fluctuate, with average highs around 17°C (62°F) and lows around 9°C (48°F). The weather was mostly sunny, with a slight chance of rain, perfect for capturing the vibrant colors of the landscape with my camera. I made a mental note to buy a travel adapter; I had forgotten mine. Luckily, I remembered to pack my portable charger, so my camera would last the day.
Before boarding the train, I stopped at Mountain Top Cafe - Pelion for a quick breakfast. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day of exploration. I ordered a traditional Greek pastry and a cappuccino, savoring the warmth and the rich flavors. It was a simple meal, but it set the perfect tone for the adventures that lay ahead.

As the train chugged along, I was captivated by the scenery unfolding outside my window. Lush forests of plane trees, olives, and pines carpeted the slopes, while the azure waters of the Pagasetic Gulf shimmered in the distance. The The Little Train of Pelion, with its narrow tracks, is considered one of the narrowest railway lines in the world. We crossed stone bridges and passed through tunnels, each turn revealing a new, breathtaking panorama. The rhythmic sound of the rails and the whistle of the locomotive created a symphony of nostalgia, transporting me to a simpler time.
The journey is the destination, especially when that journey is a ride through the heart of Greek history and natural beauty.
Our first stop was Vizitsa, a charming village known for its well-preserved traditional architecture. As I stepped off the train, I was immediately struck by the village's authenticity. Stone-built mansions lined the narrow, cobblestone streets, adorned with folk art motifs. It felt like stepping into a living museum, a testament to Pelion's rich cultural heritage.

I wandered through the village, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the architecture. The central square, shaded by ancient plane trees, was a hub of activity. Locals gathered at the traditional taverns and cafes, their laughter and conversations filling the air. I paused to admire the stone fountain in the square, its cool water offering respite from the gentle warmth of the sun.
Vizitsa has a rich history, dating back to 1650 AD, and has been recognized with the title of “Golden Apple” for its well-preserved traditional architecture and cultural significance. The village is known for its traditional mansions, built with local stone and slate, many of which have been converted into guesthouses.
For lunch, I decided to try KRITSA Restaurant, known for its traditional Greek dishes. I ordered *spetzofai*, a hearty stew of sausages and peppers, and a glass of local red wine. The food was delicious, the flavors rich and authentic. As I savored each bite, I reflected on the journey that had brought me here, to this charming village nestled in the mountains of Pelion.

After lunch, I explored some of Vizitsa's landmarks. I visited the Church of Agia Paraskevi, marveling at its Byzantine-style frescoes and timeless charm. I also explored the Vizitsa Museum of Popular Art, where artifacts and exhibits narrated the story of this idyllic village.
Before leaving Vizitsa, I stopped by Filokaliashandmadecreations, a local shop selling handmade crafts. I wanted to find a unique souvenir to remind me of my time in Pelion. The shop was filled with beautiful creations, from intricately woven textiles to hand-painted ceramics. I finally settled on a small, hand-carved wooden figure of a centaur, a nod to Mount Pelion's mythological past. I chatted briefly with the shop owner, who shared stories about the local artisans and their craft. It was a reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses and preserving traditional skills.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Portaria for dinner at Tavern Pelion Geuseis Portaria. The tavern was warm and inviting, with a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. I ordered *kontosouvli*, a spit-roasted meat dish, and a side of *tzatziki*, a refreshing yogurt and cucumber dip. The food was hearty and satisfying, the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Mount Pelion had exceeded all my expectations. The The Little Train of Pelion had transported me to a different era, Vizitsa had charmed me with its traditional architecture, and the local cuisine had tantalized my taste buds. It was a day of discovery, a day of immersion, a day that had left me with a deep appreciation for the beauty and culture of this enchanting region.
Tomorrow, I plan to hike the Centaurs' path and explore Makrinitsa Central Square. I'm also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Meintani (Niki's Taverna) for breakfast, Polydroso restaurant for lunch, and 1701 Wine Restaurant for dinner. And, if time permits, I'll check out Minelska bar for a relaxing evening drink. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me in Mount Pelion.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Mount Pelion. It's a reminder that sometimes the best journeys are those that take us off the beaten path, allowing us to discover the hidden gems that make our world so rich and diverse. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow will bring even more adventures in this captivating corner of Greece.
I am so glad I decided to embark on this solo adventure. Aisha would have loved to see the handmade creations in Filokaliashandmadecreations. I will have to bring her back here one day. Tunde and Funke would have found the train ride quite quaint and amusing, I'm sure.
