Following Mythical Footsteps in Pelion

Today was a day of legends and vistas, a deep dive into the heart of Pelion's mythical past and stunning natural beauty. From tracing the steps of centaurs to soaking in panoramic views from a village hailed as the 'Balcony of Pelion,' it was an experience that resonated with both the historian and the wanderer in me. The crisp November air added a touch of magic, making every moment feel like a scene from a timeless story.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Meintani (Niki's Taverna) in Zagora. The reviews I had read painted a picture of great food and gracious staff, and they were spot on. Niki's Tavern is known for its quality and use of free-range products. The tavern had a cozy environment with wooden decor. Apparently, in the winter, there is a wooden stove that serves as the only source of heat. The word Meydani comes from the Turkish word Meydan and means an open space like a square with an excellent view. It was a delightful start, fueling me for the day's adventures ahead. I savored the Greek flavors, the fresh ingredients a testament to the region's bounty. As I ate, I planned my day, excited about walking the Centaur's Path and seeing the views from Makrinitsa.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off for the Centaurs' Path. Located near the village of Portaria, the path promised a blend of natural beauty and ancient mythology. According to Greek Mythology, Centaurs were hybrid beasts (half humans and half horses) that used to live on Mount Pelion. In Ancient Greek Literature they are related to all the negative natural phenomena, such as sudden climate changes or any unexpected weather conditions. They are depicted as lunatic, impulsive creatures and they are usually accused of causing many destructions to humans. As I started on the trail, I couldn't help but imagine these creatures roaming the same woods, their hooves echoing through the trees. The path was well-maintained and marked with red circles on stones, making it easy to follow. The hike is considered relatively easy to moderate, and suitable for families.

The scenery was nothing short of enchanting. Lush greenery surrounded me, towering trees creating a cool, shaded atmosphere. I crossed wooden bridges over small streams, the sound of trickling water adding to the tranquility. Small waterfalls and springs dotted the landscape, each a picturesque scene that begged to be photographed. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. I paused at a stone water fountain, a perfect spot to rest and soak in the beauty.

The Centaurs' Path was more than just a hike; it was a journey into a world where myth and nature intertwine, creating an unforgettable experience.

After my walk among the centaurs, I journeyed to Makrinitsa, known as the 'Balcony of Pelion'. As I approached the village, the views began to unfold, offering glimpses of Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf below. The village itself was a sight to behold, its traditional stone houses and cobbled streets exuding a timeless charm.

I made my way to Makrinitsa Central Square, a hub of history and culture. Known as the Balcony of Pelion, this enchanting square offers sweeping views of Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf. Its cobbled lanes and traditional stone houses paint a picture of a bygone era. The roots of The Makrinitsa Central Square trace back to the 13th century. The square was once a bustling hub of commerce and culture, where merchants and locals gathered to exchange goods and stories. The square’s ancient plane tree, believed to be centuries old, stands as a natural monument, offering shade and a sense of timelessness. I stood in awe, taking in the panoramic vista that stretched before me. The sky was a brilliant blue, the sea a shimmering expanse, and the city of Volos a distant tapestry of buildings. I could see why this spot was so beloved, its beauty capable of capturing the heart of any traveler.

Wandering through the village, I admired the traditional architecture, the white houses contrasting against the green hills. I passed the Immortal Water Fountain, a marble structure built in 1809, its lion heads spouting fresh mountain water. The Church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, dating back to 1792, stood proudly in the square, its stone reliefs a testament to local craftsmanship. I even peeked into the Theofilos café, hoping to catch a glimpse of the famous fresco by the renowned Greek artist Theophilos Hatzimihail.

For lunch, I found myself at Polydroso restaurant, drawn in by its reputation for authentic cuisine and breathtaking views. And what a find it was! This family-run establishment served up some of the most delicious Greek food I've had on this trip. The Polydroso restaurant has the best food in the Chorefto region. The view is breathtaking and incredible dishes. Everything we've tried tasted amazing - spetzofai, kolokithoanthoi, lamb souvlaki. The view, at the balcony, is otherworldly, you can easily spot Skiathos or Skopelos. I savored every bite, the flavors enhanced by the stunning backdrop. The restaurant is run by a talented couple who cultivate and prepare most ingredients themselves.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to a glass of wine at 1701 Wine Restaurant. The restaurant offers a cozy and elegant setting, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. I enjoyed a glass of local red, its rich flavor a reflection of the region's terroir. The ambiance was warm and inviting, the perfect place to reflect on the day's adventures.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I made a final stop at Minelska bar for a nightcap. The bar is part of the Minelska Resort, known for its traditional architecture and modern amenities. The Minelska bar has a beautiful waterfront terrace with an inspiring view at the Pagasitic Bay. I sat on the terrace, sipping a special exotic cocktail and gazing out at the twinkling lights of the bay. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with myth, beauty, and culinary delights.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point and the Clock Tower. I'm eager to see more of what this enchanting region has to offer, and I have a feeling that Pelion will continue to surprise and inspire me.

As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I am reminded of why I embarked on this solo journey. It's about immersing myself in new cultures, discovering hidden gems, and connecting with the history and beauty of the world around me. Pelion has already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what else awaits.

It's moments like these, sitting alone with my thoughts, that I feel most connected to myself and the world. Aisha and the kids would have loved today. Perhaps we can come back together one day. I miss them, but I know that this solo journey is something I need to do for myself. It's a chance to recharge, reflect, and rediscover my passion for travel. And who knows, maybe I'll even find a new chess partner along the way.

The journey continues, and I am ready for whatever tomorrow may bring.
