Solo Exploration of Mount Pelion's Mythical Landscapes
Day 8: Farewell to Pelion: A Day of Scenic Views and Culinary Delights
Reflecting on my final day in Mount Pelion, Greece, filled with breathtaking views, delicious food, and unforgettable moments. A perfect ending!
A Fond Farewell
As my solo journey through the enchanting landscapes of Mount Pelion draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of contentment and nostalgia. This final day was a tapestry woven with scenic train rides, historical reflections, and delightful culinary experiences, each moment a vibrant thread in the rich narrative of my Greek adventure. It's amazing how a place can capture your heart in just a few days.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Polydroso restaurant in Pouri. The cozy haven offered authentic Greek cuisine crafted from local ingredients. I savored each bite while enjoying the romantic setting and stunning views overlooking Skiathos and Skopelos. The couple running the restaurant clearly put their heart into the food, making it a perfect start to the day. It was a bit of a climb to get there, but so worth it for the view and the lovingly prepared food.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Pelion Train Viewpoint of Pinatakes, eager to experience the famed railway. The narrow-gauge railway, a marvel of engineering, once served as a vital link between the coastal city of Volos and the fertile villages of Mount Pelion. Though I didn't take the train itself today, the viewpoint offered a stunning panorama of the route, a reminder of a bygone era when steam engines chugged through these very mountains, carrying goods and connecting communities. I could almost picture the train winding its way through the landscape, a steel serpent amidst the verdant hills. I spent a good hour there, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of the scene. It's moments like these, where history and natural beauty converge, that truly make a trip memorable.

Travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about experiencing new perspectives and embracing the unknown.
Next on my itinerary was a visit to Argo, a restaurant in Milina, touted for its special Greek cuisine that combines tradition with new ideas. Milina itself is a charming seaside village, and the restaurant lived up to its reputation. I enjoyed a leisurely lunch, savoring well-cooked Greek recipes and excellent salads with virgin olive oil. The emphasis on the Mediterranean diet was evident, with fresh, high-quality Greek products taking center stage. As I enjoyed my meal, I reflected on the mythological significance of the name 'Argo,' reminiscent of Jason's ship in his quest for the Golden Fleece. The connection to ancient Greek legends added a layer of depth to the experience, blending culinary pleasure with historical intrigue. It made me think of my children, Tunde and Funke, and how they would have enjoyed hearing the myths associated with this place.

In the late afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of relaxation at Grappa Vino & Aperitivo. Though my itinerary had me visiting the branch in Volos, I ended up at a location closer to where I was exploring. It was a cozy and atmospheric bar, perfect for unwinding with a glass of local wine. The bar is known for its updated wine list and unique cocktails. It was a great spot to relax and reflect on my journey.

For my final dinner in Pelion, I chose Agora 1955 in Portaria, a multipurpose space that combines a restaurant, cafe bar, and flea market. The Karaiskou family, who also runs Karaiskos Farm, has created a unique establishment that celebrates local products from Thessaly. The building itself is retro, made of stone and wood, adding to the rustic charm. I enjoyed a delicious meal, focusing on the earthy delights and simple yet timeless flavors. It was the perfect way to end my culinary exploration of Mount Pelion, savoring the authentic tastes of the region one last time.

As the day winds down, I find myself contemplating the beauty and tranquility of Mount Pelion. This solo trip has been a rejuvenating experience, allowing me to reconnect with nature, delve into history, and savor the simple pleasures of life. From the charming villages to the stunning landscapes, every moment has been a gift. Although I missed Aisha and the kids, this time alone was exactly what I needed. It's funny how travel can do that – it can fill you up even when you're on your own.
Tomorrow, I begin my journey back to Ottawa, carrying with me a treasure trove of memories and stories. I’ll fly from Athens, the first leg of my journey. Mount Pelion, with its mythical landscapes and warm hospitality, will forever hold a special place in my heart. Until next time, Greece!
