A Day of Discoveries in Pelion
The crisp mountain air filled my lungs as I set out for another day of exploration in Mount Pelion. Today promised a blend of panoramic views, historical insights, and a touch of local charm. I was eager to see what hidden gems this 'Mountain of the Centaurs' held in store.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Loukoulos. This charming restaurant felt like stepping into someone's home, with its rustic décor and the aroma of traditional Greek dishes filling the air. The owners, Giorgos and Katerina, have cultivated a welcoming atmosphere, making me feel right at home. I savored every bite of my meal, knowing that a day of hiking and sightseeing awaited me. Fuelled up and ready to go, I set off to explore the wonders of Pelion. Loukoulos indeed provided a great start to my day. Their kitchen is based on Greek traditional recipes from grandma Flora, and I could taste that.

My first stop was the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point. The drive up was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning landscape. As I ascended, the air grew cooler, and the views became increasingly breathtaking. Reaching the observation point, I was met with a vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. The panoramic view was simply mesmerizing, encompassing the rolling hills of Pelion and the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. It was a moment of profound peace, a chance to reflect on the beauty of nature and the journey that had brought me here. I took several photographs, trying to capture the essence of this incredible place, but no image could truly do it justice. I felt a sense of connection to something larger than myself, a feeling of awe and gratitude for the opportunity to witness such splendor. It was a truly spiritual experience, and I lingered there for a while, simply soaking it all in. The Cross itself stood as a beacon of faith, a reminder of the enduring power of belief.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next on my itinerary was the Clock Tower. As I approached the village where the tower stood, I couldn't help but feel a sense of stepping back in time. The Clock Tower stood proudly against the skyline, a testament to the history of the region. Built in the early 19th century, the Clock Tower has witnessed countless moments in the life of this village, standing as a silent observer of the passage of time. I learned that clock towers mark the hour by sounding large bells or chimes. I marveled at the architecture and the intricate details of the tower. The craftsmanship was remarkable, a reflection of the skill and artistry of the builders. I climbed the steps to get a closer look, imagining the generations of people who had done the same before me. The view from the top was equally impressive, offering a different perspective on the surrounding landscape. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving our history, of honoring the legacy of those who came before us. I felt a deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Pelion, a place where the past and present seamlessly intertwine.

Lunch was at Synantisi, a restaurant in Kissos. Synantisi means meeting in Greek, and this place certainly lived up to its name. The family owners, who know the secrets of traditional Pelion cuisine, greeted me warmly and prepared a delicious meal using local ingredients. I savored traditional spetzofai, giant baked beans, homemade tzatziki and Greek garlic dip, accompanied by a glass of tsipouro. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploration. Mrs. Ria, daughter of Kostas Karkalas, prepares the appetizers freshly daily. The flavors were authentic and satisfying, a true taste of Greece. As I ate, I chatted with the owners, learning about their family history and their passion for sharing their culinary heritage. It was a delightful experience, a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people and cultures.

After lunch, I ventured to Botanothēkē, a local shop specializing in herbs and natural remedies. As someone with a keen interest in holistic wellness, I was eager to explore the treasures this shop held. The moment I stepped inside, I was enveloped in a fragrant aroma, a blend of earthy and floral scents that instantly calmed my senses. The shelves were lined with jars and containers filled with a colorful array of herbs, spices, and essential oils. The shopkeeper, a knowledgeable and friendly woman, greeted me with a warm smile and offered to guide me through the selection. She explained the properties and uses of each herb, sharing her expertise and passion for natural healing. I learned about the traditional remedies used in Pelion for various ailments, from soothing teas to potent tinctures. I purchased a few items, including some local herbs and a handcrafted soap, eager to incorporate them into my daily routine. It was a fascinating experience, a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of preserving traditional knowledge. For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at cardamo OINOMAGEIREIO in Makrinitsa. This restaurant is known for its authentic Greek cuisine and its charming location. As I reflect on my third day in Mount Pelion, I am struck by the diversity of experiences this region has to offer. From the spiritual heights of the Cross of Jesus Observation Point to the historical depths of the Clock Tower, from the culinary delights of Synantisi to the herbal wonders of Botanothēkē, every moment has been a journey of discovery. Pelion is a place that nourishes the soul, stimulates the mind, and delights the senses. It is a place that I will carry with me long after I have left its shores.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the coastal side of Pelion, with visits to Agii Saranta Beach and Limnionas Beach. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Nagual Beach Bar in the evening. It's a change of pace, and I'm eager to see what the beaches of Pelion have in store.
And as I prepare for another day of adventure, I am reminded of the words of the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy:
Keep Ithaca always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you are old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaca to make you rich.
These words resonate deeply with me, reminding me that the journey itself is the destination, and that the true riches lie in the experiences we gather along the way. Goodnight from Mount Pelion.
I hope you enjoyed reading about my day. Stay tuned for more adventures from Mount Pelion!
