Exploring the Natural Wonders of Gran Paradiso
Day 7: A Day Among Giants: Exploring Fenis Castle and the Pont d'Aël
Step back in time with Ahmad and Aoife as they explore medieval castles and ancient Roman aqueducts in the Aosta Valley.
Whispers of History in Aosta Valley
Today, Aoife and I journeyed through time, tracing the footsteps of medieval nobles and Roman engineers. The Aosta Valley, with its dramatic landscapes and storied past, offered us a glimpse into worlds far removed from our own, yet intimately connected to the tapestry of human endeavor. It was a day of discovery, where every stone had a tale to tell and every vista evoked a sense of wonder.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Belvedere. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong Italian coffee, while Aoife opted for a lighter fare of fruit and yogurt. Fuelled for the day, we set off to explore the wonders that awaited us. The weather was kind, with sunny skies and a gentle breeze, perfect for a day of exploration.

Our first stop was the magnificent Castello di Fénis. As we approached, the castle emerged from the landscape like a fairy-tale fortress, its pentagonal shape and array of towers hinting at centuries of history within. Unlike other defensive castles perched atop inaccessible cliffs, Fénis sits gracefully on a low hill, surrounded by meadows. This unique setting immediately set it apart, revealing its dual role as both an administrative seat and a noble residence. The castle dates back to at least 1242, reaching its zenith under the Challant family in 1340, one of Europe's most illustrious families.

Wandering through the castle's well-preserved interiors, I could almost hear the echoes of noble footsteps and the murmur of courtly conversations. The inner courtyard was particularly captivating, adorned with frescoes depicting Saint George slaying the dragon and a gathering of wise men and prophets. Aoife, ever the librarian, was particularly enthralled by the proverbs and moral maxims inscribed in ancient French along the wooden balconies. The harmony of the architecture was truly striking, an iconic symbol of the Middle Ages in Valle d'Aosta.
The marvelous Fénis Castle, in the middle of the Aosta Valley, with numerous towers and double-crenellated walls, is one of best-preserved medieval castles in Italy.
I learned that the castle had been transformed into a rural dwelling, with ground-floor rooms converted into stables and the first floor used as a barn. It was purchased by Alfredo d'Andrade in 1895, who initiated restoration works completed by Mesturino. Today, the castle, owned by the Regional Council, stands as a testament to its rich history and architectural significance. As we explored, I imagined what it must have been like to live within these walls, surrounded by such grandeur and history. The visit truly transported us back in time, offering a vivid glimpse into medieval life.
For lunch, we decided to try Ristorante La Genzianella, a local favorite known for its traditional Aosta Valley cuisine. I opted for a hearty dish of polenta with melted fontina cheese and mushrooms, while Aoife chose a lighter salad with local greens and grilled vegetables. The food was simple, yet delicious, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients that define the region's culinary identity. As we savored our meal, we discussed the morning's adventures, marveling at the rich history and stunning architecture of Castello di Fénis. The restaurant provided a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, making it the perfect spot to recharge before our next excursion.

After lunch, we drove to Pont d'Aël, an ancient Roman aqueduct that stands as a testament to the engineering prowess of the Roman Empire. Built in 3 BC, the aqueduct was designed to supply water to the newly founded colony of Augusta Praetoria, now known as Aosta. As we approached the site, the aqueduct's towering arches emerged from the landscape, spanning the Grand Eyvia river with an air of timeless grandeur. I was immediately struck by the sheer scale and ingenuity of the structure, a remarkable feat of engineering that has stood for over two millennia.

We walked along the public trail that now runs through the aqueduct's water channel, marveling at the intricate system of canals and conduits that once carried water to the city. The views from the aqueduct were breathtaking, with the lush valley stretching out below and the snow-capped peaks of the Gran Paradiso National Park looming in the distance. It was awe-inspiring to imagine the Roman engineers who conceived and constructed this marvel, their vision and skill leaving an indelible mark on the landscape.
I learned that the aqueduct is 6 km long in total, and it features unique features such as a control corridor below the waterline. It was initially thought to be a three-story structure, but further research revealed that it was used to transport iron ore and served as an irrigation pipeline for agricultural land. The water may have also been used to meet local drinking water needs.
As we explored the Pont d'Aël, I couldn't help but reflect on the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire and its profound impact on the world. The aqueduct stood as a symbol of their ambition, innovation, and mastery of engineering, a reminder of the power of human ingenuity to shape the world around us.
Before dinner, we stopped by Montura Store Aosta, hoping to replace the portable charger I had forgotten to pack. While the store had a wide selection of outdoor gear, I couldn't find the specific charger I needed. However, I did manage to pick up a new pair of hiking socks, which I knew would come in handy for our upcoming treks in the Gran Paradiso National Park. Aoife, meanwhile, browsed the selection of travel guides, adding a few more titles to her already extensive collection.

For dinner, we decided to try La Maison du Gout Café, a charming restaurant known for its cozy atmosphere and traditional Aosta Valley cuisine. I ordered a hearty dish of carbonade, a local specialty of beef stewed in red wine, while Aoife opted for a lighter vegetable soup. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was warm and inviting, making it the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

As we savored our meal, we discussed our plans for tomorrow, which include visiting Maison Bruil di Introd and Castello Reale di Sarre. We are both looking forward to discovering more of the Aosta Valley's rich history and cultural heritage. After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, soaking in the sights and sounds of the evening. The air was crisp and cool, and the stars twinkled brightly in the night sky. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
Tomorrow promises more exploration, with Maison Bruil di Introd and Castello Reale di Sarre on our itinerary. I'm particularly excited to see Maison Bruil di Introd, a traditional rural house that offers a glimpse into the region's agricultural past. Aoife, of course, is eager to delve into the history of Castello Reale di Sarre, a royal castle with a fascinating past. And perhaps, if time allows, we'll find a cozy spot to relax and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Aosta Valley.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region with my beloved Aoife. The Aosta Valley has captivated us with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm hospitality. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, knowing that there are still many more treasures to discover in this enchanting corner of Italy.
I am glad Aoife and I decided to visit the Montura store in Aosta, even though I didn't find a power bank. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and I ended up buying a new pair of hiking socks, which I know I will need as we continue our journey through the Gran Paradiso National Park. I am also looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary, especially visiting the Maison Bruil di Introd and Castello Reale di Sarre.
Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to purchase a portable charger at the first opportunity. It's a small thing, but it can make a big difference when you're relying on your phone for navigation and photography. With that thought, I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep, dreaming of medieval castles and ancient Roman aqueducts.
Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new things, learning about different cultures, and connecting with the past. As we continue our journey through the Gran Paradiso National Park, I am excited to see what other adventures await us.
