Reaching for the Sky in Gran Paradiso

Today was a day of pushing limits, both physical and mental, as Aoife and I set our sights on Gran Paradiso, the highest peak entirely within Italy. The allure of standing atop this majestic mountain, surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Gran Paradiso National Park, was simply irresistible. It was a day filled with challenges, triumphs, and unforgettable moments that I'm eager to share.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Sant'Orso - Mountain Lodge & Spa in Cogne. The spread was impressive, featuring everything from fresh pastries to local cheeses and cured meats. I even indulged in a bit of champagne, as suggested by some reviewers of the hotel, feeling it was a fitting way to fuel up for the day's adventure. Aoife, ever the sensible one, stuck to her usual strong coffee and a croissant. The hotel, with its panoramic views of the Gran Paradiso mountain group, certainly set the stage for an inspiring day. I must say, the location of the hotel is perfect, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. I can see why families enjoy staying here; it’s a great base for exploring the area.

After breakfast, we geared up and drove towards the trailhead. The weather in Valsavarenche was partly cloudy, with a temperature of 3°C, which was quite a contrast to the warmer temperatures we had experienced in Dublin before leaving. We knew that mountain weather could be unpredictable, so we packed layers and hoped for the best. The drive itself was scenic, winding through lush valleys and past charming villages. It was a reminder of why we chose Gran Paradiso National Park for this adventure – the sheer beauty of the Italian Alps is simply breathtaking.

Our primary goal for the day was to ascend Gran Paradiso, standing tall at 4061 meters. I had read that it's considered one of the most accessible 4,000-meter summits in the Alps, making it a popular choice for those looking to experience high-altitude climbing without extreme technical difficulties. However, I knew that it would still be a significant challenge, requiring good physical fitness and acclimatization. We also planned to visit Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II, a mountain hut that serves as a base camp for climbers attempting to summit Gran Paradiso.

We started our trek from Pravieux in Valsavarenche, following the trail towards Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II. The hike was moderately challenging, with a steady incline that tested our stamina. The path wound through alpine meadows, alongside gurgling streams, and past rocky outcrops. The views were simply stunning, with panoramic vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys opening up at every turn. We even spotted a few ibex grazing in the distance, their majestic horns silhouetted against the sky. I managed to capture a few photographs, hoping to preserve the memory of this incredible landscape.

As we climbed higher, the air grew thinner, and we had to adjust our pace. Aoife, with her Irish resilience, seemed to handle the altitude better than I did. I found myself stopping more frequently to catch my breath, but the stunning scenery kept me motivated. We passed several other hikers along the way, exchanging encouraging words and sharing stories of our adventures. There's a unique camaraderie among those who venture into the mountains, a sense of shared purpose and mutual respect.

Reaching Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II was a welcome sight. The hut, perched on a rocky promontory, offered breathtaking views of the surrounding glaciers and peaks. We took a well-deserved break, enjoying a simple lunch of bread, cheese, and salami that we had packed. The hut was bustling with climbers preparing for their summit attempts, and the atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation. I chatted with a few of them, learning about their experiences and sharing our own.

The climb to the summit of Gran Paradiso is typically a two-day affair, with climbers spending the night at the Rifugio before making an early morning push to the top. Given our schedule, we decided to forgo the summit attempt this time around. However, standing there, gazing up at the peak, I couldn't help but feel a sense of longing. Perhaps, one day, I'll return to conquer this majestic mountain.

Instead, we spent the afternoon exploring the area around the Rifugio, taking in the stunning views and soaking up the alpine atmosphere. We hiked along a nearby trail, marveling at the glaciers and the rugged beauty of the landscape. I tried to capture the essence of the place with my camera, but no photograph could truly do it justice. It's a place that needs to be experienced firsthand, to be felt in your bones.

As the day drew to a close, we began our descent back towards Valsavarenche. The setting sun cast a golden glow over the mountains, painting the landscape in hues of orange and pink. It was a magical moment, one that I'll cherish forever. The descent was easier on the lungs but harder on the knees, and we took our time, savoring the last moments of our alpine adventure.

Back in Cogne, we decided to treat ourselves to a well-deserved dinner at Osteria Dei Viaggiatori. The restaurant, located in a charming hamlet, was recommended for its traditional Piedmontese cuisine and warm hospitality. The reviews I read spoke highly of the place, and I was eager to try it out.

The Osteria Dei Viaggiatori was indeed a delightful experience. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with rustic décor and a warm, welcoming ambiance. The menu featured a variety of local specialties, and we decided to try the chef's tasting menu, which included a selection of antipasti, primi, and secondi. The food was delicious, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients of the region. We savored the flavors of the Alps, from the creamy polenta to the hearty meat dishes. Aoife particularly enjoyed the gnocchi, while I was partial to the carne alla losa, a regional specialty of meat cooked on a hot stone. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure and exploration.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through Cogne, enjoying the cool evening air and the peaceful atmosphere. We stopped at Bar Centrale for a nightcap, soaking in the local ambiance. The bar was lively with locals and tourists alike, and we enjoyed a glass of local wine while listening to the chatter around us. It was a perfect end to a perfect day. I must say, Bar Centrale is a gem in Cogne. The rustic decor and the warm hospitality of the staff made it a great place to unwind. They had a wide selection of local wines, and Aoife enjoyed a refreshing Aperol Spritz.

The mountains are calling and I must go.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we'll be leaving Gran Paradiso National Park and heading towards Fénis to explore the Castello di Fénis and Pont d'Aël. I'm looking forward to delving into the history and culture of this region, and I'm sure that it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences. We plan to have breakfast at Hotel Belvedere and lunch at Ristorante La Genzianella, and dinner at La Maison du Gout Café, and perhaps even do a little shopping at Montura Store Aosta.

Today was a day of pushing boundaries and embracing the beauty of the natural world. The climb to Gran Paradiso, while not a summit attempt, was a testament to the power of the human spirit and the allure of the mountains. The delicious food, the warm hospitality, and the stunning scenery all combined to create an experience that I'll treasure forever. As I reflect on the day, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible region and to share it with my beloved Aoife. It's moments like these that make life truly meaningful.

As the sun sets on another day in Gran Paradiso National Park, I'm filled with a sense of contentment and anticipation. The memories of today will stay with me long after we've left, and I'm eager to see what tomorrow brings. Until then, buona notte from the Italian Alps.

P.S. I forgot to mention, I did manage to pick up a small tin whistle at a local shop today. I'm hoping to learn a few traditional Irish tunes while we're here, a little piece of home away from home. Aoife just rolls her eyes, but I know she secretly enjoys it when I play.
