Chiang Mai's Cultural Tapestry Unveiled
Today was a delightful immersion into the cultural and natural beauty of Chiang Mai. After a restful night at Rendezvous Classic House, we were eager to explore more of what this enchanting city has to offer. Aoife, Róisín and I started our day with a traditional Thai breakfast, setting the tone for a day of exploration and discovery.

Our first stop was Its Good Kitchen (ครัวลำดี) for breakfast. I've always believed that the best way to start a day of exploring is with a hearty and authentic meal. The name of the place certainly lived up to its promise. This charming little spot served up some incredibly tasty local Northern Thai cuisine at prices that were unbelievably reasonable. It’s the kind of place where you instantly feel at home, surrounded by the aroma of exotic spices and the friendly chatter of locals and tourists alike. The fact that they offer gluten-free options, including gluten-free sauces, meant that Aoife could fully enjoy the meal without any worries. We all savored every bite, from the flavorful Khao Soi to the rich coconut chicken soup. It was the perfect start to our day, setting the tone for the cultural explorations ahead.

Fuelled up, we headed to Royal Park Rajapruek. As a keen gardener myself, I was particularly excited about this. The park was established to honor King Bhumibol Adulyadej and showcases horticultural exhibitions from various countries. The sheer scale of the place is impressive. Spanning over 200 acres, the park is divided into different zones, each representing a different country or theme. We wandered through the immaculately landscaped gardens, admiring the vibrant displays of flowers and plants. Róisín was particularly taken with the international pavilions, each showcasing unique architectural styles and horticultural techniques. The Royal Pavilion was a highlight, its traditional Thai architecture gleaming in the sunlight. We learned about King Rama IX’s expertise in agriculture, a fitting tribute to his legacy. We opted for the tram to get around, which was a great choice considering the size of the park. We even saw some people renting bicycles to explore the gardens at their own pace. The park was a photographer’s dream, with endless opportunities to capture the beauty of nature and the artistry of the landscaping.

To truly appreciate a culture, one must immerse oneself in its art, history, and natural beauty.
After a few hours of wandering through the gardens, we were ready for lunch. We decided to try Tikky Cafe, a charming spot known for its diverse menu and beautiful setting. The cafe was in a house that had been converted into a restaurant, with a covered, open-air garden setting. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, with a lovely garden filled with flowers and plants. The staff were friendly and spoke English well, making it easy to order. I opted for a traditional Thai dish, while Aoife enjoyed a smoothie bowl, and Róisín went for a fruit salad. The food was delicious, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a great place to relax and recharge before our next adventure. I found it to be a hidden gem. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere. It was an open air setting, but well sheltered from the weather. There was a water feature, small bridge, lovely garden with various flowers and plants. The staff was friendly and spoke English well. There should not be any issue at all if you need to make special dietary requests. Food is prepared without having to wait too long and prices are very reasonable.

Next on our itinerary was the Lanna Traditional House Museum (CMULHM). This open-air museum showcases traditional Lanna dwellings, offering a glimpse into the region's architectural and cultural heritage. Walking through the museum felt like stepping back in time. The traditional wooden houses, each with its unique design and history, were fascinating to explore. Róisín, who is studying architecture, was particularly interested in the construction techniques and the way the houses were adapted to the local climate. I found myself reflecting on the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Lanna people. The museum provided a tangible connection to the past, offering a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural identity. The museum is part of Chiang Mai University’s Center for the Promotion of Arts and Culture, the wooden houses were both purchased or donated by local families to help preserve the traditional architecture of the region. Walking in the garden, you will find Thai and English historical explanations about each house.

Before dinner, we decided to experience local life at Somphet Market. This bustling market is a treasure trove of fresh produce, spices, and local delicacies. Aoife was in her element, haggling for souvenirs and sampling local snacks. The vibrant atmosphere and the colorful displays were a feast for the senses. I enjoyed watching the locals go about their daily routines, a reminder of the simple pleasures of life. I even managed to pick up some herbs and spices for my garden back in Dublin, a little piece of Thailand to bring home with me. It’s a vibrant glimpse into local life and culture. Just a short stroll from the iconic Tha Pae Gate, this bustling market is a treasure trove of fresh produce, traditional ingredients, and authentic Thai flavors. For travelers eager to explore the rich culinary traditions that define Thai cooking, Somphet Market is a must-visit destination.

As evening approached, we made our way to The Riverside Bar & Restaurant for dinner. This iconic establishment has been a Chiang Mai institution since 1984, known for its riverside location, delicious food, and live music. We secured a table with a view of the Mae Ping River and settled in for a memorable evening. The menu offered a wide range of classic Thai and Western dishes, catering to all tastes. I opted for a spicy Thai curry, while Aoife chose a grilled fish dish, and Róisín went for a classic Pad Thai. The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was lively and festive. The live band started playing around 7 PM, adding to the ambiance. The music consisted of two very cool old Thai rockers on guitars. We enjoyed the music and the food. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural exploration.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're excited about visiting the Elephant Nature Park Office and Baan Jang Nak - A Museum of Elephant Wood Carvings. Róisín is particularly excited about seeing the elephants, and Aoife and I are looking forward to learning more about these magnificent creatures.
As I sit here reflecting on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Chiang Mai with my family. Each day brings new adventures and new discoveries, creating memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. The blend of cultural immersion, natural beauty, and culinary delights makes this trip truly special.
The Nomad Summit is also taking place here in Chiang Mai, and I did hear some people talking about it today. It is a conference that brings together seasoned nomads who've been part of the community since the very first summit 10 years ago, along with fresh faces just starting their nomadic journey. It's the perfect chance to learn from inspiring, successful nomads and connect with fellow adventurers from all over the world. It is being held at the luxurious Shangri-La Hotel. There is also the Borsang Umbrella and Sankampaeng Craft Festival, which is renowned for its stunning display of hand-painted paper parasols. You will see the process of making an umbrella. A vibrant parade of umbrella caravans adds to the festive atmosphere. Explore a diverse range of handcrafted products from the Sankampaeng district, such as ceramics, wood carvings, silver jewellery, and textiles. Enjoy traditional dance performances, music, and local arts and crafts demonstrations. A variety of delicious local dishes and snacks.
I'm also grateful that I remembered to pack my camera, to capture all these wonderful memories. Although I did forget my adapter for the Thai power outlets, but luckily the hotel had one I could borrow. And Aoife reminded me that we forgot our swimsuits for the hotel pool!
Good night from Chiang Mai.
